Bask – The Turning

Bask – The Turning
Season of Mist – 2025
Rock, Metal, Doom, Post, Prog, Psych, Stoner
Rated: *****

Of course we loved the fact that Ruff Majik drove a thousand miles to fill in for Bask at the Into The Void Festival in Leeuwarden last year. Cause we love those crazy South African bastards! On the other side of that coin, we were incredibly sad not to experience Bask again. And even more distressed because of the reason they had to pull out. Hurricane Helene flooded their studio, destroyed their neighborhood and shattered many of the lives around them. And even though much or all of the new album The Turning had already been recorded pre-hurricane, you cannot deny that some of that stress and pain must have seeped through in the final recordings, mixing and mastering, if only in spiritual energy. Bask. The fourpiece came together somewhere around the year of our lord 2013 and released their first album a year later. American Hollow was out of this world, different and yet o’ so earthy. A must hear album that used the spacey and psychedelic elements to paint wondrous landscapes, that keep you grounded and yet ever flowing, thanks in part due to the metal parts, the riffs and the Southern rock and Americana influences. They deepened and perhaps darkened that sound with the following Ramble Beyond from 2017. More progressive and with angular touches, it was a prelude to the album that blew both of those out of the water. Aptly titled III followed in 2019 and set a new standard for themselves. Vibrant, clear and thoughtful, there is no note out of place. There is something spiritual about the entire atmosphere. Something worthwhile and something that will guide you along a path to something holy. It feels like you are swimming in the most wonderfully clear lake of water. And those Americana moments, add even more glory to something that is already so lively, high spirited and full of energy. The III album is without a doubt extremely meticulous and highly melodic. And ever since that release the four have been working on The Turning…

At first... The Turning feels dense and troublesome; it clouds your mind and overwhelms you. Even though it starts out slowly and open, with intro Chasm setting the scene and In The Heat Of The Dying Sun, slowly building towards that first intense and straddling maelstrom. Vocals keeping you buoyant as the rhythms whirl around you and the drums try to drag you down. And at the moment when it all engulfs you and you are about to give up and let the music swallow you whole, that’s when it happens, when the melody surfaces and the entire composition starts to vibrate at an entirely different level. When the overpowering sensation becomes exhilaration and Bask becomes the edge you want to stroll along, with eye closed and arms wide open. The vocals and guitar loop becoming those high white notes, which turns the rest almost into slow motion smoke that moves backwards. Until that harsh vocal punctuation, pushes you forward again and shoves you over the edge… And this is just the opening track, but The Turning has eight and lasts for forty minutes. Labyrinthian by default the tracks eight tracks weave this entirely different universe, where anything can happen and everything does. What seemed like a dead-end a minute ago turns into a shimmering archway the next and as the vocals spin their tale, the different instruments all get their moment to encapsulate or spotlight the theme or figure. The rotating The Traveller, shoving off and closing in, much like In The Heat Of The Dying Sun did. But with more width to the vistas it traverses. The hallow The Cloth, chiming and taking the dense parts into Sanctus territory, before leaving you on an Appalachian trail with a storms raging all around you. Dig My Heels has a piano part that serves as the perfect breathing moment before that too turns into a moving M.C. Escher castle. Lofty and august, the structuring of the Dig My Heels has you continuously spinning on your… Sorry… Unwound, has even an even grander arcadian atmosphere, and soon it will be traversing into the farthest reaches imaginable, you will be there with those tones. Long Lost Light brings it back again, grounding it with a piano that could make the moon go out in the middle of the night. And the rain going back up again. And that cello. Breathtaking. Title track The Turning, searing all their myriad ways through and through with a Western and Americana touch, in debt to the guitar and the horn. And as the vocals start, you sway in the wind they’ve created, you feel the heat of the fires everywhere and the storm it might invoke. This is an album for the ages. For all corners of the world, forever…

BASK – III Review

Howling Giant - Canyons

Howling Giant - Canyons

Yikes... So, yes, the proof is in!

The world is moving faster, making a shorter rotation and soon we'll have to set our clocks forward...

So, it's not at all weird that it feels like that amazing Glass Future album came out a few weeks ago... But in October, Howling Giant will be releasing their new album Crucible & Ruin on Magnetic Eye Records!

Wanna hear the first single... Canyons is out now!

Rated:

What happens when modern day krautrock and psych jam frontrunners Kombynat Robotron decide to write proper songs without denying the jams and improvisations that cemented their status as the best band in the genre? Well, you get one hell of an album that rumbles, roars, twists, shakes and swirls like nothing else and leaves you behind stupefied and flabbergasted, unable to speak proper words for an elongated period of time. All that comes out of your mouth is an uncontrolled “Aank” and that probably is the only right thing to say.

Adjustable Mustard – Adjustable Mustard

Adjustable Mustard – Adjustable Mustard
Self-released
Rock, Jazz, Soul, Psych, Sixties
Rated: ***

A touch of jazz and soul, spicing up their sixties inspired psych rock. A voice that has a touch of Grace Slick and guitar tones that make you long for those days that the good kind of electricity was sparking everywhere. We’re talking about the two that go by the name Adjustable Mustard and after gracing us with a single and two EP’s, Your Love and Pure Love, they’re back with a full self-titled album. Adjustable Mustard is the vehicle for Katie Pitts and Will White, married and clearly encouraging each other to sound off their songs of faith and love into the world. Often uplifting in their own singular way and always encouraging the listener to believe that the right kind of energy is still surging around the globe and ready to make a come back at any time. Yes, the eight songs on Adjustable Mustard will transport you back to sixties, rekindle your poetic spirit and often set you at ease. Even at moments when the blues spies around the corner, like on Dead End Road, the underlying music will make you bop your head and simply accept that some avenues will never lead you anywhere. Closing out the album is The New Science, an atmospheric, very slow starting instrumental that for the first minute crawls under your skin and then gradually turns into goosebumps. Then as the guitar loudens and takes you by the reign, those goosebumps turn to shivers and then calm you down before closing out with a soaring sound that is as dreamy as it is uplifting. Closing out the album in perfect synchronicity.

Phantom Spell – Heather & Hearth

Phantom Spell – Heather & Hearth
Cruz Del Sur Music / Wizard Tower Records – 2025
Prog, Rock, Metal
Rated: ****

The first time I heard this album I felt the tendrils of time pull at me, sucking me through a vortex and delivering me in a distant land and distant time. A labyrinthian approach to prog rock, weaving intricate melodies and sparking the imagination with its imaginative storytelling. This is the kind of prog rock that honors tradition by moving back in time and doing everything the old fashioned way. Imploring the metal of yore, the first tones of NWOBHM and rock of the ages. But we’re listening to the new album Heather & Hearth by the highly nostalgic and incredibly warm Phantom Spell. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Kyle McNeill also vocalist and guitarist for Seven Sisters, Phantom Spell is one man, born in the lockdown kind of project that has become its own adventure. One spinning its own legendary and fantasy inspired progressive tale. The journey continues…

The Doom Charts for July 2025

DOOM CHARTS

JULY 2025

“As far as we were concerned, we were just a blues band that had decided to write some scary music.”

~ Ozzy Osbourne

We’ve said goodbye to one of our heroes. One that always felt like one of ours. Cause he never  hid his faults, his shortcomings and was honest about everything. He was one of a kind. And even though the character he was and finally became might have hindered some of his future actions, he was always himself and never shied away from doing what he loved doing. Music. He and his Birmingham mates are without any doubt responsible for all that music we so dearly love. The heavy stuff. All that he produced and all that he inspired. The forty albums in the list below are all in some way or form in dept to the cannon blast that he delivered. Ever since that ominous church bell, that first riff and that first vocal line… “What is this that stands before me?”

Well, Dear Ozzy… It’s the Doom Charts. And it would not exist if it wasn’t for you. None of the forty albums below would exist. And we thank you for them all. And we thank you for giving up petty crime and forming a band. We thank you for hunting around town for a microphone and amplifier. We thank you for finding the guys that became your band members… We thank you for the fucking awesome ad!  And we thank you for changing The Polka Tulk Blues Band into Black Sabbath… We thank you for all the music…

She's out! That lovely July edition of the Doom Charts!

An amazing edition once again, filled with 39 brand new albums for you to peruse! 39 you say?! Yes, one carried over from last month... None other than that ACEVES album MAGNUM DOPUS!

But as usual, I could have voted for them all! Gonna listen to them all in a row... Starting with Hemelbestormer's The Radiant Veil!

Already featured on Stoner HiVe...

Welcome to Doom Charts, representing some of the finest bloggers, journalists, radio, podcasters and reviewers from the heavy underground around the globe.  Each month, our critics submit their picks for the best new doom, sludge, metal, stoner, psychedelic and heavy rock albums.  The results are compiled and tabulated into the chart below.  This is a one-stop shop for the best new albums in the world…

Superseed – Tremor

Superseed – Tremor
Savage Magic Records – 2025
Rock, Stoner, Metal, Grunge
Rated: ****

You know you should be heading over to the Superseed bandcamp page, right? Cause it’s out, today, and right now, their new album Tremor! And it’s Bandcamp Friday as well! And we did not premiere the awesome single Stand Your Ground and equally amazing Mage Rager for nothing! It was to make sure you all knew what Superseed is all about and that their album is filled with these kind of hard rocking, metal loving bangers. Banging your head is a given, moving your hips as well, cause almost all of their tracks have this highly pop sensible action to them. It’s immediate, the recognition of kindred souls delivering the heavy goods in fine and fun fashion. There’s still some punk energy and grunge influences, which were more apparent on their self-titled 2019 album, but their love for metal has started to surface more and more. And this adds the perfect amount of grit and grime to their juicy stonerrock and catchy heaviness. It’s an earthquake alright, one that will make you dance like a madman and scoot boogie your ass off!

Video Premiere - Superseed – Mage Rager

Video Premiere

Superseed – Mage Rager

It was all the way back in April when we were honored to premiere that very first single and video for the upcoming Superseed album! Stand Your Ground had all the makings of a household weekend party starter! And guess what, the entire new Superseed album is filled with anthems! It’s called Tremor and will be out… This Friday! That’s right, August 1st! On Savage Magic Records. But right now, right here on Stoner HiVe we are thrilled to premiere another single and video for you all! It’s called Mage Rager and is a savage banger! Starting slowed down, sluggishly building, picking up speed and nudging up to more traditional metal before delivering that ferocious end section. A rager indeed! With fire magic! In those eyes and in all that tongue action!

PR Wire:

Superseed crashed into existence in Bristol, England in early 2017, a four-man juggernaut fueled by the twin-engine roar of singer-guitarists David Edgar and Ben Taylor. Backed by the thunderous pulse of Matt Colley on drums and Keith Bowers’ bass laying down a filthy groove, this hard-rocking wrecking crew delivers a sonic gut-punch that demands attention.

Weaving a gritty tapestry of hard rock muscle, garage-punk snarl, post-punk edge and a stoner fuzz haze, Superseed channels the raw energy of MC5, the desert groove of Queens of the Stone Age, the doom of Black Sabbath and the snarl of the Sex Pistols into a sound that’s all their own: massive riffs, killer hooks, and melodies that stick like napalm.

Since their self-titled debut album Superseed dropped in 2019, they’ve torn up stages across the UK, leaving a trail of sweat-soaked gigs and festival triumphs. Their singles have roared through the airwaves, scoring spins on Planet Rock, BBC Introducing, Total Rock, Primordial, and beyond, earning them a global cult following. Now, Superseed are gearing up to unleash their next beast, Tremor, via Savage Magic Records on Friday 1st August 2025. Cooked up in their DIY garage studio, Freq Factory, this album promises to crank the intensity to eleven and solidify their reign as face-melting rock renegades.

Top 10 Most Listened Artists Last Week…

Black Sabbath
Bask
Solace
Aceves
Cosmic Reaper
Les Mazoetans
The Division Men
Stoned Jesus
The Hives
Ponddigger

Welcome to another Monday and another glance back at the week past. As predicted, there was very little time to HiVe. We hope to have more this week. And we think we just might. We listened to great albums though. But all news and all that pales in comparison to the sad news that came in on Tuesday. Ozzy Zig went off to have his great gig… In the sky… Only two weeks after his final show. And then. The following day, the news came George Kooymans passed away the same day. Ozzy and his Black Sabbath instrumental to all the heavy rock and metal that followed. George and his Golden Earring for every rock band from the Netherlands. So, yes, naturally, we spun a lot of Sabbath and Earring after that. But the above list also features new music, just out or soon to be released. Like the new Bask, The Hives, Stoned Jesus and Cosmic Reaper… And we dig’m all! So, get ready for those new ones and check out all listed above!

Descendants of Crom VII Festival

Descendants of Crom VII Festival

Over here in Europe we have so many amazing festivals, it’s insane. And I hope to have attended them all at least once one day. And then to learn that the USA only has a handful kept baffling me. But slowly, I am finding out there are a few more. Like the Holler of Doom Festival over at Mountain View Farm in Kentucky, which had their fifth edition a week or two ago. And in September the seventh edition of the Descendants of Crom Festival will take place. Friday, September 26th and Saturday September 27th to be exact over at Thunderbird Cafe & Music Hall in Pittsburgh… And look at that line-up! It has all kinds of sweet doom and savory metal!

Friday:
Passing Bell, Olathia, Weed Demon, Riparian, Valkyrie, and Ringworm

Saturday:
Fog Giant, Sathanas, Funerals, Brown Angel, Cherubs, Rebreather, Edhochuli, Fistula, Crypt Sermon, and Black Tusk

An incredibly DIY, straight out of the Heavy Underground, let’s do this family style kind of festival. For it not only provides in all the metal needs you might have, it also spices the festival up with limited edition hot sauce collaborations and special custom brewed beers! Sounding more and more like the perfect weekend with everything we heard about it. A definite must experience festival! And one to jot down on my list of ‘I hope one day’… Cause well, we’re all Descendants of Crom!

Les Mazoetans – Merry Christmas From Hanoi

Les Mazoetans – Merry Christmas From Hanoi
Self-released / Forbidden Place Records / Sounds Haarlem Likes Vinyl – 2025
Rock, Garage, Surf, Noise, Punk, Blues
Rated: ***

After hearing the second track Explosion Man I immediately started longing for the day that Les Mazoetans would be on tour with the Del-Toros and the Sha-La-Lees! What a wild night that would be! You never heard of Les Mazoetans you say?! Well, that might be entirely logical, for it is yet another brand new, project by Jeroen Ligter, Pieter Holkenborg and Xavier Teerling. Names you might know from other bands they play in together or apart from each other. Namedropping a handful will surely ring a bell or two, so how about Geishas of Doom, Atlanta, Automatic Sam, Kintsugi Empire and Suit And Tie Johns. There are many more of course, but if you know any or all of those bands, you will immediately know what kind of rock music is in store for you. This time however they turn their garage into even more of the trashcan variation and infuse it with more surf oriented guitar work. Distorted noisy vocals and mouth harp weirdness turn a few moments into something The Stooges could have produced. And there’s a lot of that ramshackle attitude that Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is known for. Cause there’s blues there as well, the growling, the stomping kind. The kind that only a wild man can deliver, completely feral and baring teeth. Is Merry Christmas From Hanoi your new favorite album? If you like the seemingly chaotic and the true underground spirit, then absolutely! And otherwise, the twenty minutes this highly colorful punk whirlwind lasts, will still surely rev you up, weird you out and get all kinds of longings surging through your body… Wild nights and twisted adventures lie in wait…
