But we’ve also always dug the Capetown Filthy Hippies, identified with them and am supremely happy to be around when their music is all happening! And yes, we are slowly turning into the Mongrel Records Press Agency, but we can’t help it, we love what that label puts out! We mentioned their Gem City Kush album from 2021, so we knew what kind of sticky icky we we're getting ourselves into, and are therefor pleased to smell Marijuana Johnson has returned with another bag of high life heavy rock! Stoner metal, doom and punk all rolled up into one nice and fat blunt. Since the three from Marijuana Johnson go full weed-referenced on everything they do and once again on their new six track Reefer Chamber, we feel we can do so as well. Cause the three are turning more and more into the Cypress Hill of the stonerrock scene, transforming the already weed referencing ‘stoner’ part into ‘weed’… Marijuana Johnson, in only a few releases time, have become the stalwarts of weedrock and turn their new Reefer Chamber into one heady listening party. They’ve got Sabbath like doom and proto to zone you out, they’ve got punk moments, for whenever you are guzzling them 40’s to quench your thirst and crunching headbanging metal for the munchies. Title track opener alone, the echo chamber, that is Reefer Chamber, will walk hard and all over you, turning you head to glass, and that one track will keep singing around in that brain of yours for hours and hours. And it might be a while before you realize you had the thing on repeat… Indeed, for all you Natural Born Pot Smokers out there, this could be the soundtrack to your life! And for all you non tokers, this will get you high!

The Malterra three hail from Santa Rosa, California in the USA and landed their debut album Hydrosphere on the twentieth spot of the July Doom Charts of 2023. We quickly jumped at the opportunity to write a short blurb for this one, cause we love the dynamics this album brings to the table. There’s so much push and pull, that its feels like there’s a full moon and spring tide is upon us. The natural flow of their progressive rock feels entirely wholesome executed and meticulously crafted. Imaginative, sometimes turbulent metal that waits for the expressive coloring of the expansive blue. It does not always arrive, those vast and atmospheric sequences, they often opt to stay longer in the alternative sequence. But when it does, it feels so liberating. Alternative metal is one of those genres that encapsulate everything. And seems highly fitting for the four track Hydrosphere release. For the album moves expertly through all sorts of metal genres, by way of prog and psych. A highly interesting, complex, and wayward album that manages to still be accessible thanks to the melodic elements. And that bass work in Tsunami, mouth-watering!

Grabbing one of the vinyls from the premier run of their Interstellar Voodoo album from 2019, (which came in Fourth on the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2019) was definitely one of my highlights of that year, and putting it on the player, still makes me feel giddy. Learning only later what was happening with the band and what tragedy and loss they suffered, does not steal away from that experience, and if anything makes me even happier and perhaps proud. Not because I own that piece of history in physical form, but simply that I’m listening to it, to that majestic bass work of the founding member Ole Sletner, who sadly passed away in 2021. Did the other members immediately know they would continue? Is Paleolithic War Crimes, dedicated to their loving friend, a final salute? Whatever the case, I do feel proud of what Saint Karloff’s Paleolithic War Crimes turned out to be, and I have nothing to do with the album or the members, I am merely a listener. But that feeling persists, and I am not ashamed to admit the weirdness of that, or of the fact that I did tear up once or twice while listening. Recorded by the two remaining members, Mads Melvold and Adam Suleiman, the seven tracks offer a lot of psych and prog out of the proto era. They kick things off with Psychedelic Man, which arrives slowly but surely, before a juggernaut break and following doom nod commences. Which quickly flows away and turns into this sailing galleon that splits through the waves and sets you up for what this album seems to be all about. Keeping you on your toes and never continuing long with one set of rules. Second track Blood Meridian, with luscious key work, that seventies riff, and a very bluesy boogie, is perhaps the track that wants to keep the same energy going for an entire song, but secretly changes it up as well, before whipping you into a frenzy. But never for one moment does the fluent breaks and changes tire. Saint Karloff seemingly effortlessly skirts along all possible pitfalls when you aim to make your album as diverse and grandiose as possible. It’s a dangerous game when you opt to go a different route than most others and by doing so turning the outcome into something purely yourself, but Saint Karloff pulls it off, and makes it all come together on Paleolithic War Crimes. Like clockwork, the timing and tone are executed to perfection. Heavy in dynamics, choosing for sonic brutality one moment and serene classic sounding psych the next. Surprise lurks around every corner and if you let it, Paleolithic War Crimes will shock and awe…

Arriving in September, the new Blessed Black EP Seasons Vol.1!  The first single Obsidian was audible since July and the second of the three tracks is out now. Called Unable this is some hallowed seventies doom, with sanctified vocals, sacred riffs and consecrated drum pounding. Indeed, so damn good!

About Blessed Black:

The band was founded by Murphy and drummer Ray Bates in 2018 with original guitarist Chris Emerson and original bassist Jens Nielsen. Current bassist Brad Bellamy joined in late 2019 following Nielsen’s departure. In 2022 Chris Emerson departed and after a few months existing as a trio, the band decided to bring in good friend Jake Stone as a new permanent guitarist. Musically Blessed Black are heavily influenced by bands like BLACK SABBATH, DANZIG, TROUBLE, ROKY ERICKSON, and GRAVEYARD, to name a few. The outfit released their first EP Beyond The Crimson Throne in 2020, followed by the single "La Brea" in 2021. The upcoming release marks a new era with Blessed Black's newly established line-up and shift in direction to a sound which Murphy describes as what was originally intended when the band was created.

Yojimbo hails from Strassbourg, France. The four-piece delivered their debut five-track self-titled EP back in March of 2022. But 2023 saw them charting a new course, with a new line-up and Doomsday Clock is the first single and video for the new crew. And the new Doomsday Clock song hold so much promise for the future, paradoxically, that we cannot wait for it to arrive. ‘Intergalactic Stoner’ they state, and does indeed feel like you are with them, right there, on this endless cosmic journey. Formed in December 2020, Blood Lightning brings together the talents of vocalist Jim Healey (We’re All Gonna Die), guitarist Doug Sherman (GOZU), bassist Bob Maloney (Worshipper) and drummer J.R. Roach (Sam Black Church). What began as a 2019 Halloween show playing the entire Black Sabbath "Born Again" album just for fun has culminated in the release of original material by four veterans of the Boston metal/hardcore community. But there’s little hardcore influence on the Blankets track, this is good and wholesome classic metal, nineties era most but overall just slow grooving but intensely pounding! Can’t wait to hear the full album…

I, Captain - Kemisk Välfärd

More Finland! And even weirder! It’s I, Captain and their new Kemisk Välfärd release. For even though this heavy psychedelic nugget has some sweet stoner rocking going on, some doom nodding and some highly fuzzed out moments, there’s also some highly freak out garage, crazy kraut influenced free rock that takes you to entirely different dimensions. With all this good and heavy craziness coming out of Finland, my next campervan tour must surely be through that lovely country! Kippis!

Ampacity – IV

Out since March, it’s IV, the fourth release by Gdynia, Poland quartet Ampacity. Out on Piranha Music, the album inhabits that adventurous hemisphere of kraut, psych and space rock. The six instrumental tracks distinctly give up their love for the sixties and seventies side of prog. Although the stonerized first minutes of Some Kind Of Glow and later eighties spirit and keywork, sees the four gallantly parade through all the genres you can think off. IV needs to be heard by more! By all!

There are too many bands called Humanoids. And even though the Swiss born Humanoids have been operating for over twenty years, it’s still crazy to wade through that many Humanoids bands to get to this awesome one. For the four tracks on Echo Mistakes are definitely that! The evocative, big gestured alternative rock, mixed with the stoner sound that became so huge in the early two-thousands, and spacious elements that make it all soar, have that magic element that nobody knows where it stems from. Bunsenburner - Rituals

Closing off the Saturday is Bunsenburner and their Rituals release, which comes out on August 11! Yes, indeed, still a week away! Experimental doom, jazz metal, psychedelic stoner and stonerized free rock. An ever-rotating and expanding hive mind initially conceived and realized by the bassist and producer Ben Krahl in 2012, but now encompasses at least six individuals for Rituals. “Like its predecessor, Rituals was recorded live with a strong improvisational – jazz, if you will – approach, with certain segments and motifs being planned beforehand, but with the main forte coming from open-ended teamwork.” And well, this stream of consciousness rock is the stuff of dreams!

We hear all sorts of stuff from all sorts of angles and sources, but what we should really lend our ear to is all those stories of hope, love and wonder. And of course, those fine and mighty Heavy Underground albums. Sorry, been feeling a bit emotional and philosophical of late, Sunil Singh, posted a great story at the exact right moment for me. Leading me down a rabbit hole of books about ‘knowing’, ‘humanism’ and ‘synchronicity’. Conclusion: we know very little, but can feel all that more. And letting that feeling ride the almighty wave of the Great Magnet, can transfer the right kind of energy to you and all around you… And that, can lead to ‘connectedness, wholeness, and timelessness’… The way a song can circle back towards that main riff is amazing, the way a song can circle back to the one that started the story is truly miraculous. And that’s what music is, a fucking miracle… And the sheer amount of great music we can listen to makes it all even more wonderous and huge. It’s magical… And to serve you all again, with 39 new albums on this month’s edition, out of a voted list of 241 heavy albums, is a blessing… Sorry, I’m feeling a different kind of heavy, the heavier side of emotions… And I know, I should be heavier than this… So, let’s press play and let that energy be transformed into the other kind of heavy!

They’re called [B O L T] and with their newest release ( 0 5 ) they give us yet again some blackened instrumental drone to submerge ourselves in. Seventy-seven minutes of doom, drone, sludge, and ambient metal! And if those brackets aren’t enough, they move outside of them whenever they feel like it. Two basses, one drummer, delivering sometimes dark but often beautiful amniotic drone…

Early on we mentioned their Habanero release and Dromomania on the HiVe, but back in April they released their eight track aptly named Adriatic Desert album, and we are very saddened to say we did not mention if before now. We are talking about the Italian duo Le Scimmie! And the way the album bursts out of the gate with that Wild Boar track will immediately turn up the dry heat and whirlwind sand around your head! Bottled Fish – Dreams Lie

We’re travelling through April so it seems, cause Bottled Fish released their Dreams Lie album back then as well. The duo, trio, or sometimes four-piece from Prague, Czechia, sketch indie, slow core, psychedelic, and alternative drawings of human existence. Often moving towards the bronze, faded colors of an old picture, the bossa nova, jazzy kind, you wait for the crystal chandelier to come crashing down.  Karma Vulture – Something Better

Can you guess when Karma Vulture’s Something Better album was released? Indeed, back in April! Featuring The Absurd vocalist Ben Foerg on Drums the ten tracks give you some spicey hardrock, that goes the way of the Californian desert and stoner as much as it does a more classic seventies take on rock. A bit of eighties, a bit of surf, a bit of space, and a whole lot of attitude! Out on Bent Knee Records, obviously, it naturally ended up on the April Doom Charts! Lucky Number 13!

Alconaut – Endless Skies

Back in May, Corsican trio Alconaut released Endless Skies to much acclaim and stormed to the Top 3 of the May Doom Charts. I love Corsica, had many wonderful adventures there, but apart from arriving by boat in Bastia, I never really spent time in that little city. Listening to Alconaut I immediately think I should! Their progressive and psychedelic rock also meanders through the metal landscape and brings its very own spirit. A bit like the island does as well…

The lovely lady behind Mettle Media PR very carefully picks whatever she thinks is awesome and she wants to promote and in doing so, has set a precedent, the bar high and a trustworthy mark up on the wall! So, when the promo came in for the new single The Devil Knows My Name by Los Angeles trio Max Boogie Overdrive we knew we would be blown away properly! Bad ass motoring stonerrock and speed boogie metal! It’s the second single for the Stoned Again album to be released in October and Suffer Sister was the first track leading the charge… Can’t wait for the rest of the album!

A Tribute To Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend: 50 Years Later

We just read the news that we all will soon be celebrating 50 years of the Sparks' classic 1974 LP 'Kimono My House'. Another great album in the great re-imagining series set up by that awesome Pale Wizard Records. And this news has come on the heels of another release in that 50 Years Later series… One you surely will have seen pass by somewhere in your feed, cause the A Tribute To Budgie - Never Turn Your Back On A Friend: 50 Years Later has been melting ice away across the globe and hitting it out of the park with a forearm smash! The Budgie re-imagining has been righteously done by some of the best underground bands. Alunah kicks things off with an awesome rendition of Breadfan! Probably the most famous Budgie track thanks to the various cover versions and Metallica’s first and foremost. But we most confess most of those versions pale in comparison to this opening version of Alunah, both the vocals and the postponed intensity, give the track the air and breathing room it always deserved. Both Firegarden and Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell give honorable versions of Baby Please Don’t Go and You Know I’ll Always Love You. The later one turning way more psychedelic and garage. But when Regulus starts riffing You’re The Biggest Thing Since Powdered Milk, and the vocals kick in, it sends goosebumps down your spine, and you immediately remember you should listen to their damn fine Pulse album from last year again. Perfect tone and riveting guitar work later on turns this one in another definitive cover version. Up next is In the Grip of the Tyrefitter’s Hand, performed by Syncolima gives the damn fine bass lines a bit more highly deserved spotlight and thanks to the vocals adds a bit of grit and rawness. Great Electric Quest adds some instrumentation to Riding My Nightmare turning it into a more classic rock version than the soft ballad used to be. One of my favorite songs of the original album was the prog rock Parents and hearing it being delivered by Sergeant Thunderhoof, a band that has grown so much into their own thing, since last years This Sceptered Veil, is the icing on the cake. The vocals once again carrying the emotionality the song always had, extending the scale even, and the guitar wails, dense riffs, and later clean noodling all give the right kind of soul. It was the ending track of the original album, but since there’s more time left for this vinyl release, the boy added three bonus songs. Guts, Forearm Smash and Melt The Ice Away. Of which the final track on this album, Melt The Ice Away, taken from the 1978 Impeckable album, performed by Solar Sons is a rendition that this track demanded. Classic, proto, mixed with some more stonerrock riffage, turns Melt The Ice Away in a fiery full speed driving song. Loving it! Just like the rest of the album, perfect production, and a virtuous way to give Budgie and this album more attention. Hey, and when the original Budgie drummer, Ray Phillips gives it the universal nod and sends a message of thanks for the work done, you know it’s done good!
