Solanhum – Rostratum

Solanhum – Rostratum
LSDR Records – 2022
Rock, Psych, Fuzz, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ****

I might be mistaken here. I often am. But it seems that the Rostratum album by Mexican duo Solanhum has received way too little attention. Released early September by the very cool LSDR Records, the Mexican duo takes you on a wild, wonderful, and very psychedelic adventure. Five tracks, forty-five minutes of earthy, natural sounding psych that implores the fuzz to an awesome degree. Touches of stoner and doom are there to bring you into the more trucking realm of their album or the slow and downtrodden parts. Featuring two members of Vinnum Sabbathi, the duo also invites two guests on the album to deliver some keys on two tracks. Third track Shine On You Crazy Balrog features Hector Fernandez on keys, from the Grábale Grábale Studio, where the album was recorded. Hector Fernandez is also responsible mixing and mastering the album and does some fine key work on that track. What follows is fifteen minute long battleship track: Ariamnes (the Real Name of a Facehugger), with an extra layer of Moog synth, performed by Juan Tamayo from Vinnum Sabbathi. A special track that link chains all these different parts together with that Moog, and the combination of intense crashes, grooving rhythms and low roaring riffs. Special tracks are also the opener and closer. For opener Basti (Falling into the natural realm) pays homage to the guitar player of German band Weedruid Sebastian "Basti" Adolph who sadly passed away in 2020 and closing Weedruid - Eis Sieben, is that bands unreleased track. Which seems to fit perfectly with the overall feeling of Rostratum, that of paying homage to all that good and heavy stuff floating around in the world.

And you might wanna scroll down a bit… Cause for the lucky few there might just be a code…

Thanks to Solanhum…

CCQueen – Scavenger

CCQueen – Scavenger
Self released – 2022
Rock, Alternative
Rated: ***

Hi Thierry “Pumpkin-T“ François, did you already find out about CCQueen? That crazy four-piece rock band from Bordeaux, France? Founded in 2015, they’ve released their debut full-sized album Scavenger back in October. Eleven alternative rock tracks that imbed some psych and prog influences and above all seem to dance in their very own weird and maddening cul-de-sac. They offer a damn fine cover of Greenday’s Basket Case, doing something like what Torre Florim did to Prodigy’s Firestarter. And the two tracks in French, Litanies and Zaroff are amazing, reminding a bit of Serge Gainsbourg and Arno. Without a doubt, the two stand-out tracks on the album. Also, because you feel the vocalist being more comfortable with the language and his own voice in those tracks. But don’t be alarmed, the other eight tracks all have its merit. A bit of Nick Cave influence here, a bit of Madrugada there and a whole lot of quirky rock. Melancholic and romantic, mysterious and magical, the CCQueen four paint impressionistic tapestries filled with dreams that keep a man going. Ending it all with another stand-out track called Delicious, and the ending, as with all great art, is always a surprise…

Telekinetic Yeti – Primordial

Telekinetic Yeti – Primordial
Tee Pee Records – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Metal, Doom, Sludge
Rated: *****

The Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2022 will start on December 13th and since the announcement of the list request last Sunday, your votes have been pouring in. Yes, you are all already sending your lists to us in a massive amount. That show of love for the countdown and all those heavy albums released this year makes us feel all warm and giddy inside. And well, one album, that has been receiving quite a few votes already and we never got around to mentioning on the HiVe, is Primordial by Telekinetic Yeti. Released back in July it immediately reached the Number 5 position of the Doom Charts that month and was spinning over here quite a lot. It’s the sophomore release from the Telekinetic Yeti moniker from Dubuque, Iowa, USA and sludges forward with ravenous intent and like only a massive Telekinetic Yeti could do. Primordial holds eleven tracks, that give you almost forty-five minutes of unadulterated riffs and riffs galore. Courtesy of founder, guitarist and vocalist Alex Baumann, the riffs sound rough, gritty, raw, and yes, Primordial. New drummer, Rockwel Heim pounding away where needed, the man also gives even more light for the guitar to shine. Or is it still Oscar Johansson on drums we hear, for he apparently joined after Athony Dreyer left? And did Mr. Heim only join after completion of this record? Whatever the case, the drums, and its crashes have the ability to lift the guitar parts above the ooze and sludge and give it this higher edge. Sharper, with a more cutting and slashing approach, the energy is more intense, crushing, and wild than that first release from 2017. Explosive might be another word applicable to the entire Primordial album. A super sophomore release, that almost sounds like the album you were always missing, and you will realize this, listening to wave after wave of riff highlights blast out of your speakers…

And you might wanna scroll down a bit… Cause for the lucky few there might just be a code…

Thanks to Telekinetic Yeti…

Fuzznaut – Apophenia

Fuzznaut – Apophenia
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Doom, Space
Rated: ***

Fuzznaut’s Apophenia release came out early November and is the first full-sized release after that twenty minute long, four track EP Form is Emptiness from 2019. Or well, what constitutes full length nowadays? Apophenia gives you thirty minutes and six tracks and a lot of spaced-out stoner compositions and atmospheric doom meanderings. The one-man project by Emilio Rizzo is as meditative and pensive as they come. Often feeling like an in-depth analysis of the texture of sound and what the mortar might be that holds a musical structure together, the six tracks will surely sink you deep within yourself or make you have an outer body experience. Apophenia... The tendency to perceive meaningful connections between unrelated things, I do that a lot, and therefor tend to listen to Fuzznaut whenever I see a large flock of starlings do one of their dazzling displays of murmuration…

The Otolith - Folium Limina

The Otolith - Folium Limina
Blues Funeral Recordings – 2022
Rock, Avant Garde Metal, Atmospheric Doom, Post-Metal
Rated: *****

We must confess. It took some time to come to grips with this release. But once it sank its hooks in, there was no letting go. For it arrived like a bolt from the blue, and as the sky turned dark, you could hear the heavy rumbling approaching… And at once you realized you were listening to a hammer strike against the gods… One that would ring on into legend… And forever… An album labelled as avant-garde metal might not always lure you in… But as the debut record Folium Limina by quintet The Otolith shows us, we probably should have let us be ensnared more often. For Folium Limina is a work of art that’s capable of fusing elements of sludge, noise, black, doom and metal into a brilliant symphonic almost operatic album, dizzying, stunning and grandiose. Rising from the ashes of equally stunning outfit SubRosa, the The Otolith five opt for gigantic gestures, a massive amount of layers and the fierce ability to turn it all down to a mere trickle of sounds. And then they let the roar swell, with enough gravitas to bring the world around you to a halt. Which is part of the succor given by Folium Limina since much of the album is a desperate trek forward through all sorts of trials and tribulations. For those who see too deep and too much, for the outsiders, the hour-long existentialistic masterpiece will pierce and strike, and penetrate deep into your heart. The intensity of the experience not easily repeated, might suck the wind away, and might show you once again that we live with the reference of past experiences, not future events. But as such, Folium Limina will be the touch stone for you to see the inevitable. The simple fact that time, is like an ever-rolling stream, bearing all your sins, all your failures, all you dreams, all your realities away… Folium Limina will bring you into the now. The only time that truly exists. And for one hour long, the world around you will be brought to a halt. And that is something to be truly thankful for…

And you might wanna scroll down a bit… Cause for the lucky few there might be a code…

Thanks to The Otolith…

Shit The Cow – Slaktgrop

Shit The Cow – Slaktgrop
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Garage, Punk
Rated: ****

Their first release was already ten years ago. And ever since that time, that Volume/Cow release in 2012, we’ve definitely mentioned quite a lot of their outpouring. We’re talking about the Swedish collection of weird cats that bring their very own brand of scrapyard rock named Shit The Cow. The new three track EP is called Slaktgrop and features some great garage rock with stoner and punk influences. Opener Cassius even sound like it might go the route of doom for a moment, but then the sundried riff takes hold, the languid male vocals careen and the drums take it to the bowl, before the female vocals give it a moment of angelic beauty. But only for a moment. The Shit The Cow five have released another great three track release and you will want to join in on the hunt!

The Green Uncle and the Black Hole Surfers - In the Animal World

The Green Uncle and the Black Hole Surfers - In the Animal World
Virkelighedsfjern – 2022
Rock, Kraut, Space, Psych, Punk, Garage
Rated: ****

The Danish Virkelighedsfjern label has been amazing releasing noise, space, kraut and drone releases for quite a while now. And now they are releasing the In The Animal World album by Russian fourpiece The Green Uncle and the Black Hole Surfers on vinyl. That is something to rejoice in, for the five tracks on this mini album are righteous droning kraut rockers. It’s fuzz and it’s space create a warm and embracing atmosphere for you to go crazy in. That’s where the punk and garage influences come in handy. Or even the almost drum ‘n bass insanity that is present on that middle track: Axaxaxaxaxaxa. Or that stomping final track that will have you dancing like an insane devil! In their hometown of Nizhniy Novgorod, the band is known for their work at the underground club Tago)) Mago)), a diy-club that has hosted more than 500 musical artists over the last 6 years. In December they will enter the studio again to record a collection on heavy psych anti-war songs. Sounds like a good bunch of surfers!

Samavayo - Songs for the Iranian People

Samavayo - Songs for the Iranian People

I was lucky enough to see Samavayo a few weeks ago during one of those amazing Club Void nights in the Effenaar in Eindhoven. And two of the tracks they performed during that night had vocals in the Persian or Farsi language. The language of Iran. And those two tracks mesmerized and enchanted the most. The way vocalist Behrang Alavi lived within those words and the way the lines, even if one could not understand them, felt like beautiful poetry and struck a chord within the heart of all who were present. He gave a little speech about Iran, the fight for human rights, women’s rights and the daily struggles people all have to go through… And received a wave of applause…

And now, they’ve released all their Persian songs, from all their albums, the two from the new Payan album and the three from earlier albums on a digital release. And all revenue from this five-track release will go straight to the women fighting for their rights in Iran. Head on over to their bandcamp for great music and righteous cause…

“These Persian songs from our various albums are dedicated to the Iranian People standing up and fighting for their freedom! "Women! Life! Freedom!"

Liquid Maze – The Metz Session

Liquid Maze – The Metz Session
Self released – 2022
Rock, Psych, Prog, Stoner
Rated: ****

The four tracks on the new Liquid Maze release were recorded in their own Metz studio. It’s the place where the alternative rock scene from Vienna, Austria gather and get their groove on. And groovy it surely is! With a high jam-like quality, it’s often the keys that take center stage. Together with the guitars, they set the scene and paint the landscape. Soon you will feel enveloped by the atmosphere created and by the time third track Pieces rolls around you are deep and completely into the Liquid Maze. The excellent vocals on this track, and those drums, keeping it airy, fluent and whenever the rhythm demands it, tight and choppy. There are masters at work! Which is quite a feat, when you realize that the band was founded seven years ago, and the new key-player only joined last year. And sure, we dug, Snake Jazz from 2021 and Colours of Euphoria from 2016, but The Metz Session shows what these five Liquid Maze cats truly excel at: doing wild progressive rock, that goes the was of stoner when it moves forward, and fluid psych when the mood is right and the ambient rock calls for it… This is good, this is The Metz Session…

And you might wanna scroll down a bit… Cause there might be a few codes for you to enjoy!
Thanks to Liquid Maze!
