Black Box Revelation – Highway Cruiser
Caroline – 2015
Rock, Blues, Garage
Rated: ****
There was a bit of silence surrounding the Belgian duo Black Box Revelation. The most recent album My Perception was recorded in Los Angeles in 2011 under the skillful guidance of Alain Johannes. Ofcourse it’s never really quiet, when it comes to making noise, cause they toured like crazies. But finally after four years we are treated to some new excellence for at home: Highway Cruiser. It is a ten track counting ode to throbbing blues and grating garage. This time around they went to New York to work with Thomas Brenneck of the Daptone Label. The guy that loves to work analog. And ofcourse one will be getting a more soulful edge on ones compositions when working with a guy like Brenneck. And especially when you not only make the lyrics more personal but also get vocal help from The Gospel Queens on tracks like War Horse and Highway Cruiser. But the best aspect of the new album is, without a doubt, the guitar playing. Which sounds much more melodic and with a definite hang towards the old grandfathers of the blues. Which will make you hear the musical freedom with every note played…
