Weedow – Weedow

Weedow – Weedow
Self released – 2024
Rock, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ****

Man, I love Krakow, Poland so much. And I figure the dudes from Weedow found out and immediately decided to send their promo to me. Nah, there I go being delusional again. They’ve been sending out their promo to all the Heavy Underground sites. And I’m very happy they did! Cause this is an album everyone should hear! Cause their full-sized debut is full of hazy, psychedelic stonerrock and doom and has been spinning here ever since! That earthly rumbling underneath, those guitar solos, the tones, the heaviness, the haziness: it’s blissful! And even though the Weedow name references those green leaves, the songs themselves are of a much deeper and higher nature. And where some doom albums tend to lean too much on tone and the slow march, the seven tracks on the full-sized debut of the Polish three show they have been careful in showing more width and elasticity in their compositions. Some splattering with doom energy, others more languid and all of them balanced and intriguing. Nine minute and a half long sixth track is indeed an ode to goodbye, a building reverie towards something ecstatic, and where some bands might have gone guttural or howling, the Weedow three have a guest singer named Wiktoria Kowalska recite a poem on Threnody, lifting that one track out of the mud and haze with that sheer brilliant touch. But all seven tracks add something different to their overall classic sounding doom, and therein lies the addictiveness of Weedow.

Slift – Ilion

Slift – Ilion
Sub Pop Records – 2024
Rock, Metal, Space, Noise, Prog, Kraut, Psych, Punk
Rated: ****

We never actually wrote something about their Ummon album. Even though it was one of our absolute favorite albums from 2020. It came in on Number 9 of that years Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown, according to all your votes. We had it listed in our Top 10 back then, but listened to it so much afterwards, we should have put it in our Top 3. What’s even better, we got to see Slift live quite a few times afterwards, and they always managed to amaze. And their Sonic Whip 2023 show also immediately made Slift an absolute favorite for my wife. So ,when the Ilion promo arrived, it naturally immediately jumped ahead in the gigantic queue of amazing albums we need to listen to. Ilion is no UmmonIlion is much wilder, rougher and more disturbing. With almost white-out droning noise moments, contrasting those prog rock turning into kraut instances and vocals that might haunt your dreams. Grandiose in scale and execution, the main goal for Ilion seems to have been to keep the listener strapped into a chair of a rocket ship blasting through space, never knowing what comes next, but always keen to find out.

Dool - Venus In Flames

Dool - Venus In Flames

Summerland was released some four years ago and all are longing for some new DOOL music. Well, the wait is almost over. April 19th, will see the release of The Shape Of Fluidity on Prophecy Productions. And Venus In Flames is the second video and single from that album.

“‘Venus in Flames’ deals with shaking off societal expectations, obliterating gender roles, and learning to love one self in the process. It is an inner dialogue sung out loud, and translated to moving images in the accompanying video by director David Fitt. This is the opening track of our new album ’The Shape of Fluidity’, wherein the smouldering ashes of the old make way for something new and exciting. Self-love is the key.” ~  Raven van Dorst

From the PR Wire:

Everything flows, nothing ever stays the same. The same can be said about the third studio album of the fast-rising Dutch rock band DOOL. Aptly entitled "The Shape of Fluidity" there is not just musical innovation but the full-length revolves around themes of personal change, physical change, psychological change, and the ever-changing world around us. DOOL and particularly singer and guitarist Raven van Dorst ask questions: How does change affect us? How do we keep being ourselves in a world that is so incredibly demanding and aggressive towards the individual? We must be as fluid as water to navigate ourselves through this ocean of possibilities and uncertainties – and make peace with chaos and impermanence. Musically, DOOL continue on the path laid out on the two previous studio recordings of heartfelt rock music with added metal elements, while displaying a maturity and focus in songwriting that has grown out of experience. "The Shape of Fluidity" exhibits an eclectic yet seamless amalgamation of progressive and post-rock as well as doom and heavy metal in combination with an inherent catchiness and a dynamic backdrop. It is hardly surprising that the theme of the album that pitches the concept of identity against the backdrop of a world in constant flux connects the album's lyrics to the biography of lead vocalist Raven. Born intersex, doctors at the time assumed that they could surgically determine which kind of life the infant should lead and decided that the child should be a girl. This has led to a life full of soul searching, fighting taboos and breaking boundaries, until recently Raven decided to reclaim that which others have tried so hard to take away from them, and finally embrace their hermaphroditic nature. The band derived the name DOOL from the Dutch word for 'wandering'. When their debut album "Here Now, There Then" was released in 2017, it became an instant success. Their fresh and wild rock and metal sound received "Album of the Month" titles in the renowned German magazines Metal Hammer and Rock Hard as well as the "Best Debut Album 2017" award from the former, while Vice (US), Aardschok (NL), and De Volkskrant (NL) happily chimed in with heaping praise on the young Dutch band. With their sophomore full-length "Summerland" released in 2020, DOOL successfully exceeded the already sky-high expectations and scored even more "Album of the Month" awards in German Rock Hard (10/10) and Sonic Seducer magazines as well as #2 soundcheck positions in Metal.de, Metal Hammer (DE) and another #1 in the Polish edition – with a pile glowing reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. With "The Shape of Fluidity", DOOL offer so much more than just damn cool music. These extra dimensions of depth and meaning are all part of their unique appeal and come out clearly on the new album. May all those who wander gather under the fluid flag of DOOL!

Last Quarter – For The Hive

Last Quarter – For The Hive
Self-released – 2024
Rock, Blues, Fuzz, Stoner, Psych
Rated: ***

We are truly honored and a bit embarrassed at the love displayed by French quartet Last Quarter. That they created this amazing four track and decided to name it in honor of Stoner HiVe , that they did this for us… For The Hive… Of course, we know we are delusional here. But the grand meaning behind the title and what they call the Hive is not lost on us. Stoner HiVe has always meant for the Hive part to be viewed in a similar manner. The story of the four tracks can be read as a story meant for an earth a few or hopefully many years in the future but is actually set on a desolate planet in a part of the universe they call the P647 system. A spaceship heads over in a hurry after getting signals a bee might still be alive on that planet. And you should listen to the tracks to find out what happens. And it will not just be this story that might captivate you, the music executed uses early rock with blues, fuzz, stoner and even a bit of doom tones to transport you through space and time. The slow and meticulous opening of third track Next Morning, the extra vocal harmony parts during said track, that funky bass during final track We’ll Be Just fine, all add flavor to an already highly varied outing. A story they began with that seven minute long track Space Bee Keeper from 2021 is continued in fine form on For The Hive. Perhaps it should have been included on the EP? Although, that track was more aggressive and metal, and For The Hive speaks to quieter emotions. But these twenty minutes of heavy rock will speak to all…

It’s Monday again! Still recovering from an awesome Into The Void Festival in Effenaar, Eindhoven. What a day! What a fest! Will try to write a few words about it soon. The bands and the organization did well! Loads of Most Listened on the list were Friday Freebies over on Doom Charts. We did ten this time, all amazing records! We did the Full Album premiere for Thorndale! A wild new metal outfit that knows how to incorporate all that good stuff from before. We wrote something about those punk noise bastards from Geishas Of Doom and had to do a lot of other work, so we were unable to do more for the HiVe last week. Hope this week will be better! Although of course, Friday will be for Doom Charts once again…

Full Album - World Wide Premiere

Thorndale - Lightning Spawn

We're honored to present you all with the Full Abum World Wide Premiere of the debut album by
ThorndaleLightning Spawn sports six amazing metal tracks and almost thirty minutes of wild guitar work and majestic grooves!

And yes, we wrote a few words about it just yesterday...

"... They opt from grandiose gestures, as you will soon hear once second track Ain’t The End Of My Rope roll on. A gritty groove builds to gigantic proportions, drums crash, as the vocalist uses mythological lyrics to paint ancient and lavish vistas. Born As A Stranger, hits faster, harder and then uses that almost trademark Thorndale signature sound, giving room to a guitar solo and letting it all open up and turn light before returning to that massive chug. Distinctly operating on every metal side of the Heavy Undergound, they do have moments where a bit of grunge comes into play or their love for an alternative nineties edge shows its colors...."

We thank Thorndale and Grand Sounds Promotion for the opportunity to share this wild album with you all...

Thorndale – Lightning Spawn

Thorndale – Lightning Spawn
Self released / Grand Sounds PR – 2024
Metal, Groove, Grunge, Hardrock, Blues
Rated: ****

That opening melody, the guitar line, the way it weaves and moves and dances around itself brought some weird memories of a My Midnight Creeps song to mind, a bit speeded up mind you. And whenever that happens, you have my undivided attention. Opening, title track Lightning Spawn from international but situated in the Netherlands trio, although now foursome, Thorndale, opens like a bluesy hard rocker but you feel it will build up to something more and heavier. Soon, a more metal approach starts to seep through, turning into classic metal one moment, groove metal the next and even some southern tinged stuff as well. With a real galloping and intense bridge part, before a guitar solo lets you fly above the thunderstorm underneath. The mostly clean vocals have the unnerving quality to grab you by the throat one moment and then have this minor part that rubs against the grain. As the record continues you hear some moments, where the vocals turn a more growling, screaming and guttural style; and its sounds like the vocalist immediately becomes more confident. But as it stands, the opening track is the perfect introduction to what the Lightning Spawn album is all about. A marriage of classical styled metal, which moves distinctly into the American style and uses influences of groove, stoner and hardrock. Distinctly operating on every metal side of the Heavy Undergound, they do have moments where a bit of grunge comes into play or their love for an alternative nineties edge shows its colors. And not just the guitar, the vocalist moves into that direction as well during certain moments. Without any doubt Thorndale have crafted six songs that pay homage to metal, to wild riffage and exquisite solo work. And with almost thirty minutes, the Lightning Spawn debut leaves you wanting more. More Thorndale and of their groovy metal! Out on Friday February 23rd, we’re honored to give you a full album premiere tomorrow! Indeed, you can hear the Thorndale album a day early and get hooked on their hooks! Tune in tomorrow, Thursday February 22nd!… For the full Lightning Spawn album and check out the three singles already out below…

Geishas of Doom – The First Four Tapes

Geishas of Doom – The First Four Tapes
Self-released – 2024
Punk, Thrash, Noise, Garage
Rated: ***

In days long gone there was a short period where I shared the same office space with Jan Petit, who plays bass for Dutch (usually) 6-piece thrash, punk and noise band Geishas of Doom. I saw them play live once and could never have imagined before that fateful night that Mr. Petit could make that amount of ruckus. He was such a good and tranquil dude. Now, I do realize that the name of Jan Petit might mean little to you crazy few that might have stumbled upon these words, and therefor we should probably namecheck a few others from Geishas of Doom. Cause yes, the members from this band all play or played in different outfits. And here’s that list of damn cool bands: Birth of Joy, Iron Jinn, Automatic Sam, Giant Tiger Hooch, Tricklebolt, Atlanta and Love Supreme. So, responsible for all that noise, that lo-fi punk, that raw, venom spitting, dynamite throwing explosive racket are: Jeroen Lichter - Vocals and Spaceplank, Pieter Holkenborg - Vocals and Guitar, Rense Slings – Guitar, Daan Wopereis – Drums, Bob Hogenelst – Drums and of course Jan Petit on Bass. And on this album called The First Four Tapes, which will be released in May, they have collected their first four releases, two releases per side, twelve songs each, twenty minutes on Side A, and twenty-one on Side B. Which immediately tells you how furious and fast paced these songs are, still retaining basic melody and offering a primitive groove, the moments when they let some surf in or some experimentation, are the definite highlights. But Geishas of Doom aren’t here for highlights, they’re here to shout and scream against ‘everything that has gone too far in this day and age, the direction of perfection, narcissism, polarization and hypocrisy.’ A righteous punk adagio if ever there was one! And a fiery collection of their work so far…

Besides the list above, we also listened to and wrote something about the Dutch crazies called E.T. Deadpeach – The Cosmic Haze And The Human Race

Deadpeach – The Cosmic Haze And The Human Race
Self released – 2024
Rock, Psych, Proto, Blues, Stoner
Rated: ****

Founded in the year of our Lord 1993, somewhere in the hills surrounding charming Cattolica, Italy, the next door village to noisy Rimini, it’s Deadpeach. The Deadpeach collective always took the time to enjoy the finer things in life, release a single here or a demo there before finally releasing their debut Psycle in 2006. And now, more than thirty years after their inception, we are treated to their fourth full-sized, full-fuzzed record called: The Cosmic Haze And The Human Race. Seven tracks that have that distinctive proto groove going, that warm embracing atmosphere and that lysergic touch to make it easy for you to go with the flow or to drift away entirely. It’s starts with Madras, opening a doorway to the great beyond, and to the albums that came before, all of which featured tracks named after Indian cities. The instruments have this sweaty oriental, dense and high viscose ambience, which rolls out slowly but decidedly and builds until it finally starts to rock. And rock it does, hard and steady, until the vocals turn it into the old school diesel blues power anthem. With high riding guitar freaking taking it all home and towards the second track called: Motor Peach. (Which should be named Motör Peach?) Which is indeed, this motoring, perfect for the road kind of song that opens furiously before slowly turning a more psychedelic corner, majestic bass work complimenting insanely wicked drums and wild guitar playing. Man On The Hill is their seminal proto-blues, early seventies, heartbeat of a song. Taking it all back to the core, and so do the lyrics, taking the listener back to nature, to the important things in life. And then there’s Cerchio, a more subdued psychedelic song, taking cues from krautrock and space, before coming taking its rhythmic approach into hard rock territory, which quickly gives way to this celestial vocalization and rising melody. Which grows and grows, imploring an organ, taking on the appearance of a full orchestra before suddenly disappearing into the void. If only they had let it expand into even more gigantic territory, but perhaps, this is what they will do live. We must make sure to be present as soon as possible. Especially since the following three tracks, have these moments as well, those parts where you could hear the displaying restraint and not exploring certain opportunities even more. Rust for instance with its sunny, groove laden, surf reminiscent break sections, which could have gone on longer. Or the final track Loop (Set The Control To Mother Earth), which seems to surf on the cosmic winds as much as it feels grounded in soil. The two sides of this one track, could serve as a starting point for an entire record. But don’t get me wrong The Cosmic Haze And The Human Race is not lacking anything in any respect. On the contrary, it seems to have inspiration in abundance and wants to share that and all its energy with the listener. All you need to do, is push play and be open for it…

E.T. Explore Me – Drug Me

E.T. Explore Me – Drug Me
Voodoo Rhythm Records – 2024
Rock, Punk, Garage, Psych, Thrash
Rated: ****

We mentioned their Shine album from 2019 and were immediately incredibly happy, dancing weirdly and smiling that dubious clenched grin listening to their new Drug Me album. Yes, we felt intoxicated quick by the new E.T. Explore Me. A lot of work went into the collection of this variation of psychedelic eccentricity. Still anxious, nervous energy coming at you from all angles there are now more tension arcs, more experimentation and more weirdness. Drifting toward minimal electro punk on some songs, the Ace-Tone driven warbling still takes center stage on most tracks. Used to lure you into their midst with its addictive and infectious sounds, you will soon feel that junkie sweat break and that burning sensation in your blood. The rhythmic drive, the melodies exploding like a speedball through the nose, the fantastic lyrics reminding you of nights that might never even have happened and all the different voices drifting in and out of your head… Like those memories and those blinking lights and that feeling you might pass out at any given moment. If you weren’t an E.T. Explore Me junkie after ShineDrug Me will surely do the trick…

Sábila - Voz Ancestral
Self-released – 2024
Metal, Stoner, Sludge, Doom
Rated: ***

Picture this, on a sun bleached Caribbean island, only a few yards from the beach, besides a tiny shack made of palm fronds, tin scraps and besides a hand painted sign saying ‘Coco Friyo’ a quartet might be delivering High On Fire like heaviness. Straight from San Juan, Puerto Rico comes Sábila, a four-piece with their debut two-track serving called Voz Ancestral. Sludgy stonerrock, doom metal and touches of psychedelia. Gutteral vocals howling out Spanish lyrics and filling their humid atmosphere with dread and something otherworldly. And that eerie energy, turns their sound into a righteous hurricane. Two tracks, that roar across the beach, the ocean, the world and straight through your heart. Sábila, is good for the soul!

Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol - Big Dumb Riffs

Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol - Big Dumb Riffs
Permanent Teeth Records – 2023
Rock, Metal, Punk
Rated: ***

Holy hell and hellah fun! It’s the new Big Dumb Riffs album by Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol! And they go berserk on them dumb riffs from the very first second. In fact, they talk about only wanting to fill the album with those stand out parts from other songs, you know, your favorite rise from a certain song, your favorite riff from another, the best break you ever heard. Etc etc. They mention Primus and Pantera while talking about that, and those names aren’t mentioned for nothing. It does turn into a bit of nu-metal because of that Primus break, and Pantera riffage, but even that as it turns out, is pure fun. Not every song is as infectious as the next, but opener Clowntown immediately slays with is chainsaw riff, following 1-800-EAT-SHIT is just freakishly delicious. The lyrics fun, that gatling gun riff, bouncing drums. You could have this on repeat! Another absolute winner is Bastard Initiated, furious, powerful and fast paced! And hey, the entire record is chock full of Big Dumb Riffs, energy and fun. And lasts only 21 minutes…

Iron Jinn – Lick It Or Kick It (Live at Roadburn)

Iron Jinn – Lick It Or Kick It
(Live at Roadburn)

They returned to where it all began. Iron Jinn then named Iron Chin started life on the Last Night On Earth festival after which they stormed the fabled Roadburn festival back in 2018. Since then they delivered an amazing self-titled album, did a majestic tour with Alain Johannes, a European tour on their own and returned to play Roadburn as well in 2023. And that set, was of course recorded, and is set to be released through Lay Bare Recordings on April 5th. And as appetizer you can now view a live recorded video for Lick It or Kick It. Or listen to the live recorded Winding World on their bandcamp site… Both stunning and almost do justice to seeing these guys live…

From the Pr Wire:

Experimental psychedelic rock sensation Iron Jinn, hailing from Amsterdam, is set to captivate the music world with the release of the first video and track Lick It Or Kick It from their highly anticipated live album. Recorded during their spellbinding performance at the renowned Roadburn Festival in 2023, the album promises to be a musical journey, showcasing the band's unique blend of psychedelic rock and experimental sounds.

Iron Jinn comprises the exceptional talents of Oeds Beydals (The Devil’s Blood, Death Alley), Wout Kemkens (Shaking Godspeed, De Niemanders), Bob Hogenelst (Birth of Joy), and Gerben Bielderman (Pauw). The collaboration of guitarists and songwriters Oeds and Wout traces back to their shared history in Death Alley and Shaking Godspeed, united by a passion for challenging the norms of heavy rock music.

The band's inception took place at the Last Night On Earth festival, organized by Oeds and Wout, and subsequently evolved into Iron Jinn with their second performance at Roadburn 2018.

"The Iron Jinn 2023 Roadburn performance was the perfect opportunity for us to present our debut album in the flesh. Roadburn’s Walter Hoeijmakers made it possible for us to expand the band’s line-up for this show with the addition of Jarno Van Es on keys, so we could recreate the layered density the album has to offer," said Oeds Beydals. "This show is a moment in time that we are thankful to have captured: a band getting into its own at a very early stage."

Expertly produced by Pieter ‘Pidah’ Kloos at The Void studio, the album promises to be a sensational auditory and visual experience. Iron Jinn aims to transport listeners into a realm of sonic exploration, weaving spontaneous improvisation and new energy into their studio-produced material.

"Creating fresh counterparts to the more produced studio versions by adding spontaneous improvisation and new fire to the music. Although we hope to keep evolving, this show is a moment in time that we are thankful to have captured: a band getting into its own at a very early stage," added Oeds Beydals.

Live At Roadburn is set for release on 2 x 180g heavy weight black vinyl on the 5th April via Lay Bare Recordings. The double album captures the essence of Iron Jinn's musical evolution and creative process perfectly.

Iron Jinn invites you to relive the magic and immerse yourselves in an unforgettable experience at the album release show on the 5th April at Ekko's in Utrecht.

A new week awaits! Still recovering from a little jaw surgery unfortunately, but this week everything should be on the upside. Decided to leave out the two albums I had to listen to for interview purposes. Cause Scott Stapp and Novastar have very little to do with the Heavy Underground and that’s what Stoner HiVe is all about! The Heavy Underground and all that majestic music floating around. Like that anthemic punk from Angel Face or the new album by the stonerhardcore kings Bokassa! And there’s so much more. Let’s hope I find the time to shine some light on a few others this week! Have a great one and keep it groovy!

Captain Zero – Disarray In Unison

Captain Zero – Disarray In Unison
Self released – 2024
Rock, Grunge, Noise, Stoner
Rated: ****

You want to hang with Captain Zero? You’re in the need for some grungy and noisy ruckus straight out of Bristol, UK. Well, get on board with their debut ten track album Disarray In Unison. It’s a no brainer to be honest. The ten tracks all have this high energy alternative stoner rocking, garage trucking, nineties mucking explosiveness. And when you end your debut album, instead of starting it, with the two singles already out, you’ve got my undying allegiance. And even more so, when you then get that surprise kick by damn fine opening track Hello Pickle. The way their dense, grunge sound opens up by that one pretty little guitar ditty two thirds of the way, during that third break is stunning and gives the track that undeniable breath of air, and a moment to look forward to. For the most part the ten tracks on Disarray In Unison are proudly nasty though, hooky hard rock that harkens back to punk as much as it pays homage to grunge. And together with those metal tones turns it all into some muscular menace you never knew you needed. Something grunge perhaps never really was. But the galloping melodic thundering on Cloudhood, that punk explosion on Badidas, Day Of The Duh with that Nirvana reminiscent tone, it all breathes a love for what the grunge saga gave us. And the way they translated it into a sound meant for the now, meant for the heavy underground outbreak that went out of its way to encapsulate so many more genres, is extremely well done and absolutely laudable. Fuzzlepuck, the track that leans most towards stoner and metal, uncompromising in its delivery, trash-dappled whenever the vocals and drums crash around, is that perfect middle album centerpiece, showing chops, style and attitude. And Captain Zero has all of that and the perfect tempest like battering drummer to propel this pirate ship forwards… And straight into the arms of Sub Pop Records one would imagine…

Angel Face – Angel Face

Angel Face – Angel Face
Slovenly Recordings – 2023
Punk, Garage
Rated: ***

Angel Face, the new (since 2021) formation featuring members of The Fadeways and Teengenerate comes straight out of Tokyo, Japan to takes us back to the golden days of punk. Listening to their debut full-sized, ten track, twenty minutes long blast from the past, you would assume that there would not even be a hint of a record deal for these guys, but of course the too cool for school Slovenly Recordings already found out about them and signed them in a methamphetamine heartbeat. On the other hand, its logical somebody immediately picked them up, cause the guys and girl from those two bands toured the globe under those and more monikers like: American Soul Spiders, Raydios, Ruler and Firestarter. Legends in their own right, legends in the underground Tokyo punk scene. Angel Face is primitive and angry, but that anger isn’t necessarily that of the violent type, but more of a jubilant, tequila shot and dance wildly kind of rage. Anthemic and atavistic, this is the antidote to all the lousy music you might have heard during the week. Had to deal with a pop radio channel at work all day? Play Angel Face to get rid of that ugly taste and foul smell. Got stuck in an elevator and had to sit through a jazzy instrumental version of Sinatra’s biggest hits? Put on the album’s second track USA and you will be straight in the head again within two minutes. It’s loud and meant to be played loud, this is that ramshackle garage meant to be blasted at a garbage disposal site down the street or at one of the last semi-secret squat bars of whatever city you might live in. Perhaps not meant for the rural part of the country, as third track Big City, with riveting sing-a-long’s tries to encapsulate. Raw power, often harkening back to early sixties pop melodies, but extrapolated to the point of an explosive meltdown. And you will have one, drinking that dubious Japanese gin and dancing your ass off in front of the speakers. As vocalist Hercules used to do as a fan at their shows before he joined the band. But with the infectious Hercules handcuffed to the microphone, the now foursome are set to smile their pearly punk smile across the globe and wow the audience with their Angel Face…

SKRCKVLDET - 01:23:40

SKRCKVLDET - 01:23:40
Majestic Mountain Records – 2024
Drone, Noise, Ambient, Black
Rated: **

Droning noise experiments. Ambient grey out. Apocalyptic vibrations. Dark murmur. The list is long and filled with ominous words to try and describe the anti-music that is SKRCKVLDET. Founded in 2018, SKRCKVLDET is now a duo operating out of Gothenburg, Sweden consisting of Alex Stjernfeldt, of bands including Novarupta, Grand Cadaver, and Young Acid, and Peo Bengtsson of Beckahesten. The title of their debut album is 01:23:40 and will be released on Majestic Mountain Records. Like the swirling mass of the initial primordial soup, it bubbles, erupts, and oozes. Almost forty minutes long the five tracks offer little light or sparks that signal the start of life. Instead, it seems the album is meant to herald the end or translate that sound that might survive after creation has ended. As such, the two ending tracks Aftermath and Chaos seem to conclude there will be nothing but darkness and a slow decaying descent into nothingness.

Rope Trick – Red Tide

Rope Trick – Red Tide
Self released – 2024
Rock, Psych, Punk, Stoner, Free
Rated: ****

Two members of Queen Elephantine decided to do some musical exploration under the name Rope Trick back in 2017. It resulted in the three track adventurous release called Red Tape. Well, the duo is back with a new one called Red Tide. Two long winding, swirling, rhythm based, jazz influenced investigations of the tribalistic and ritualistic nature of desert rock. It has a sort of, spontaneous and improvisational atmosphere to it, which of course suits the two experimental musicians well. Especially the more ‘Desert Sessions’ styled second track Neptune, has that feeling, and will immediately strike a chord with those in love with the fantastic Rancho De La Luna studio series. But Neptune or first track Crescent wasn’t recorded in the desert but at Red Planet Studios, Philadelphia. And this was no improv cut to tape recording session, but two carefully, over the course of five years, crafted tracks. Which means, every single part of these two tracks is exactly where it needs to be. We hope we are correct in hearing that complicated fact, in for instance the way they decide to either rub out a tone, or let it ride. The way some lines are there to chime out into the cosmos, while others are cut short and turned extremely sharp. You will be shivering and swaying along with every move they make, which does build, and does become hypnotizing. But which never seems to be the main goal. But yes, that build up ending of Crescent for instance, with the vocals, the chanting, the guitar becoming ever more jangling. So wild, savage and dervish it will have you longing for ten more minutes of this. But there are only twenty-one minutes on the entire new Rope Trick. There are only two tracks on Red Tide, but they both have this carefree sonic explosion of guitar freaking and ever moving percussion going that is unrivalled in its uproarious and encouraging quality. It will push you to let loose, to let fly and to go with the flow of the Red Tide
