Pariahlord – Vultures

Pariahlord – Vultures
Boersma-Records – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Metal, Prog
Rated: ****

Their debut five track release from 2020 was called Embrace The Misery and now the three amigos from German based Pariahlord are back with a new album entitled: Vultures. Eight tracks, and forty-five minutes of heavy rocking bliss. Released early September; I had them on my Doom Charts list for two months straight. And glancing back at the total lists of those months, we noticed that back in October they almost made the Top 100. Perhaps my fellow contributors did not discover them yet? Perhaps the fact that the new album is not on bandcamp yet has a minor part in that fact? Which feels wrong, cause the album is stunning! Title track opener Vultures, starts off with this highly recognizable, brain tease of a loose sounding bass guitar, reminiscent of Nick Oliveri and giving it a righteous introduction to what Pariahlord will offer you on the album. For there’s a lot of metal present in that opening track. Metal and even a miniscule touch of Metallica, whether that stems from the way the guitars run over that jogging bass, or the way the vocals sometimes seem to hint at early Hetfield. Either way, it’s online minute and brings out even more of the Pariahlord sound and gives that opening track a lot of juice. Which continues on, on following Dead Man’s Hand, another early highlight of the album. Slowing down the tempo, revving up the story telling and the atmosphere, the track immediately turns up the heat. The drawling vocals build this gunslinging character reminiscent of the one straight out of the Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. The rock is big, huge, the apotheosis of all huge desert and stoner rocking, errr rock. Hazy, blinding heat, it’s all there, carefully painted by that masterful guitar and the story told. Third track Super Mega Ultra Van, with a more propelling energy and bone-dry guitar, will once again surely strike a chord with every stonerrock and stoner metal loving fiend. It’s the following track This Is The Voice Of… featuring Robert Kingham of Minimum Labyrinth and Stephen Coates of The Real Tuesday Welt, that will throw you a curveball and sadly takes some of the momentum out of the wild ride that Vultures is. Distorted voices over another voice, going on for almost four minutes, perhaps setting the scene for the Fifth track Vrillon, but unfortunately does not seem to get the message across. Although, you are extremely pleased when that Vrillon guitar starts, and you will surely fall head over feet for the more prog infused track. Valley Of The Roses sees them coloring more with even more progressive kaleidoscopic psychedelic structures and grand sounds, offering to give more room to the vocals, and making them less drawling. That explosive ending building to a languid and tranquil release, and then bursting out again, until the distortion fades away, perfection achieved. Another definite highlight! And then the two-part Halcyon tracks bring the album to a grandiose close. Truly grandiose! I still can’t fathom why Pariahlord’s Vultures has not received more attention…

Caustic Casanova – Glass Enclosed Nerve Center

Caustic Casanova – Glass Enclosed Nerve Center
Magnetic Eye Records – 2022
Rock, Punk, Psych, Stoner, Prog
Rated: ****

Remember October? That month, already so long ago… Championed by many great albums, one of them soaring high among all you crazies in the heavy underground was the new Caustic Casanova album. Glass Enclosed Nerve Center is their fifth album and goes the way of punk and psych, garage, stoner and prog. The four form Washington DC give you five highly varied tracks, but all of them carry that wild and kind of weird nervous energy with them. Offering their take on exciting and riveting rock. Opener Anubis Rex might be the easiest song for the listener to fall in love with, with a nineties takes on alternative rock, that punk spirit and all delivered with something catchy and poppy. Majestic, pure flowing bass work and electrifying guitars. The dual vocals of bassist Francis Beringer and drummer Stefanie Zaenker give it this screeching harmony, which fit their pitch and the lyrics perfectly. Following track Lodestar goes big in the style of rhythms and time signatures, giving you in their shortest track of the album an incredible adventurous and highly unpredictable, almost manic love story for prog and punk. After which two tracks follow before you get to twenty-two minute long closing punk prog opera extraordinaire Bull Moose Against The Sky, which defies all the genre labels you already had trouble pinning on them to begin with. For some strange reason it brought memories of screaming Home, Home On The Range during wild night on a rooftop somewhere in a city in the south of the Netherlands. Wanting my buddies to join in; but they didn’t even know the song. So they were just screaming something else, something about tsunamis and dogs that had died. Anyway, weird memories on this strange morning, where we listen to an acapella opening of the Bull Moose Against The Sky track. What follows is not just a song, but a story, a musical, a wild tale that would fit perfectly in a theatre. Absurd? Probably, but so is the song, in scope, scale and ability to take you with it to a different place and time… Glass Enclosed Nerve Center took some time to land, to really come to grips with it… But once it grips, it won’t let go, and will encase you and all of your nerves…

And you might wanna scroll down a bit… Cause for the lucky few there might just be a code…

Thanks to Caustic Casanova….

International Premiere - Holy Hex – Visions

International Premiere - Holy Hex – Visions

We’re honored to present to you the international premiere of the new Holy Hex album Visions. Out on Spinda Records and Sacramento Records, the full album will be released on Friday December 9th! But you can hear it here a day early, here and on the awesome DenpaFuzz and Sevilla Disonante. The Earth like psychedelic drone of Holy Hex reaches new heights, lows and inaudible frequencies on the six track Visions. The man behind this project is Fran Sánchez and does all the droning key work for this album. Extra guest delivering some wild violin on closing track Odd God is Miguel Palou Espinosa. Be ready to be whisked away with cascading drone…

“'Visions' is the return of Fran Sánchez AKA Holy Hex, and he does so with a much more introspective, melodic and intense collection of songs than seen in previous albums. Available from December 9, 2022.

This new album, whose first and only video-single (titled like the album itself) was released on November 18, is presented as the second part of a trilogy that has already begun with his second studio album 'Behold your own' (2020, Spinda Records). On this occasion, the Spanish musician takes us through his dreams through the exclusive use of synthesizers, fearlessly embracing ambient and electronic music; genres that, although might seem new to him, he has been working in one way or another since his time on guitar in Blooming Latigo.”

"[...] the way i understand the guitar IS similar to a SYNTHESIZER. WHEN I WAS IN BLOOMING LATIGO I APPROACHED MY WAY OF PLAYING IN THE SAME WAY, THAT IS, WITH REPEATS, never-ending DELAYS... EXPERIMENTING WITH THE SOUND [...]"

"'Visions' was recorded, mixed and mastered by Ignacio Velascos at La Mina (Spain) and features artwork by Gonzalo Santana (responsible for the graphic section of bands like Orthodox, Pylar or Plastic Woods). If his previous album was released exclusively on vinyl, this one will do so on compact disc via Spinda Records and Sacramento Records."
