Colossa – New Day Rising
Colossa Records – 2013
Rock, Alternative, Stoner, Powerpop
Rated: ***
Hopes were high for the Dutch Colossa threesome back around 2009 when they released their first EP. They did not really deliver on their full-sized album Born To Make A Sound that arrived two years later. It showed definite promise but failed to make that smash and grab we longed for. So with confidence and optimism we turned to their new album New Day Rising. With a new bassplayer and an extra guitarplayer they transformed into a quartet. One that leans heavily towards the Foo Fighters and with Howie Weinberg of Nirvana’s Nevermind fame doing the mastering that sound might have even become more prevalent. On some moments they sound raw and gritty and right there on the edge; where we all want our bands to play. But more often they carefully choose the middle of the road and become that powerpop band we can all tolerate. Which is an awful shame; cause we know these guys could do so much better! The songs are there. The talent is there. I guess the only thing left to do is to wait for the devil to show up…
