Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It's Friday, and this day will end soon enough; although we hope the night with last a damn long time and the drinks will be free! The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday segment is a weekly feature of a handful of bands and only a small amount of words to help spread their musical prowess and our melodic belief…

Charming Timur - A Brief Moment Of Existence

One man black metal screamo from Finland. Lauri Santeri Lohi is the man behind this project called Charming Timur and clearly shows signs of a degenerate mind that is plagued by ocd and adhd. A deadly combination to say the least. But anyone looking for a sonic disembowelment or with a definite yearning to feel like a plane crash survivor in the arctic… You’ve come to the right place…

Deathkings – Martyrs (Vol.I)

The Los Angeles quartet Deathkings released their Destroyer album back in 2011 as three long tracks that went straight through your heart like a battering ram from hell. It is now getting a re-release with all of the ideas divided and worked out. Still incredibly fuzzy, grimy and like sledgehammers to your face; but better and more complete! Check out their first song Martyrs (Vol.I) on Soundcloud!

Dumbsaint – Disappearance in a minor role: Part II: Sara

Part III was released before Part II and The Auteur came before that. And before that the Sydney based instrumental effort Dumbsaint was only a trio and released Something That You Feel Will Find Its Own Form. That was way back in 2012 and the cinematographers have now taken on a visual life of its own; with music being a very important part to their journey. So check out Part II or Part II or The Auteur and get hypnotized by the music and mesmerized by the imagery!

The Men – Pearly Gates

Their ramshackle psychedelic punk garage transports you straight back to the sixties when Dylan was hypnotic, The Doors mesmerizing and the Stones could actually wreck a stage. And the seventies video that accompanies the Pearly Gates single stemming from their album Tomorrow’s Hits, hits the right spot like an accomplished gigolo. Or check out The Men when they do their shit live and get freaky!

Navarone – Vim and Vigor

Navarone – Vim and Vigor
Suburban – 2014
Rock
Rated: ****

What a revenge it was. Their full-sized debut album A Darker Shade Of White released in 2012. It levelled the floor with their slightly plastic self-titled EP from 2009. And now, only a big year later, Navarone returns with a follow-up called Vim and Vigor! On it, they only move slightly back towards their first release, continue from the second one on and most importantly change color once again. More big gestures and more direct rocking. Less experiment and more condensed rockers. Less Zeppelin, Less Crowes, Less Wolfmother and almost no Deep Purple and loads of Foo Fighters, some Soundgarden and perhaps Raconteurs or something else with hooky choppy guitars. They’ve also dismissed that lovely tingle of soul present on their former album and all this leads to conclude that Navarone did not attempt to recreate that amazing release and wanted to produce an entirely different album. It might take some more time getting used to and perhaps it will never be as righteous and good as the one they took vengeance with; but it still rocks and rolls and has you listening to a damn impressive throat…

Toshes – The Mask We Wear

Toshes – The Mask We Wear
Self released – 2014
Rock, Alternative, Pop
Rated: ***

It’s not just alternative rock or hard rock or a little stoner with a pop sensible edge. No, these cats also implore some heavy metal, psychedelic influences and something straight out of the eighties. And let’s not forget about that funky or even reggae edge and punky attitude. Yes, the Toshes quartet is a damn weird animal and one that goes every which way but lose on their first EP The Mask We Wear.  Four distinctively different tracks with the same equalizer; a damn eerie or strange voice screaming or singing it all together. With battering drums or bouncing guitars these green clowns don’t seem to care for much else than bringing the weirdness to your doorstep; like the merry pranksters they are. It’s the fun bus and the only possible option is to get on board, buy the ticket and take the ride. It’s carnival time! And then they go ahead and release Smoker Man, not featured on this EP, but which can be heard on the YouTube link below. Do it. Cause it is probably even a lot better; with or without a mask!

Hjortene – Hjortene

Hjortene – Hjortene
Walden Rekords – 2014
Rock, Punk, Stoner
Rated: ****

With names like Valient Himself, Lorenzo Woodrose and President Fetch the Danish power trio Hjortene sure knows how to capture your attention. And then after you’ve heard their third release you realize there was no need to use these kinds of attention grabbing guest spots; the boys and their music are already incredible as it stands. Perhaps the three tracks, opener 180.000 km featuring Valient, fast paced James Brown with help from President Fetch and psychedelic closer Canada featuring Woodrose are the best efforts on the album. But if so they are closely followed by awesome stoner surf stomper Hold Dig Væk, the eerie, troubling and ever changing Pounding Hammer and lovely Weber who has you lusting after some good BBQ, preferably freshly shot deer meat, within seconds. Grin. Let’s not forget to mention the amazing repetitive builder Igennem Hårde Tider. So you see pal, the album is already right there; at the top of the pile among the great, the fun and the amazing. Check’m out and hear the Danish thunder!

Hair of The Dog – Hair of The Dog

Hair of The Dog – Hair of The Dog
Bilocation Records/Kozmik Artifactz – 2014
Rock, Hard, Seventies, Stoner, Blues
Rated: ****

It’s always weird when a band chooses the same name as many other outfits have chosen; some of which even released over ten albums as of 1993. But we gladly forgive Scottish power trio Hair of The Dog for this error on their part since they can do little wrong when one gets swept away by the tunes on their self-titled debut. Filled with classic hard rock and seventies blues with a tiny but marauding stoner drive behind it, the seven tracks on this record hit the sweet spot right exactly smack dab in the middle. Their Deep Purple, Cream, Sabbath and ofcourse Nazareth feel is offset by something windswept, cold and dusty and reminds of Graveyard’s Hisingen Blues during certain moments and Witchcraft or Lonely Kamel the next. But they stay much more hard rock and never really turn into something Scandinavian; although it might be the Viking ancestry that secretly courses through all of their veins that binds them. The most impressive part is perhaps their ability to let all of the individuals take their shiny moments; and have the bass be the propeller; or the drums be the charger and the guitar the electrifier. I guess the seventies rock riffs are back and with a vengeance!

¡Pendejo! – Atacames

¡Pendejo! – Atacames
Chancho/Graviton – 2014
Rock, Stoner, Metal
Rated: ****

Well, ¡Pendejo! hails from Amsterdam but sounds like it crawled out of a Mexican gutter somewhere. Not only because of the rough gritty Spanish vocals which also have this humorous side and quickly gets your brain wired to their second album Atacames. Also because there is this Latin-American metal sound drifting on their monstrous current. This is Michelin grade Menudo; which implores muddy guitar riffs and fuzz, bass slapping insanity, zany trumpets and a vocalist you have no problem imagining as a big hairy Mexican wrestler jumping around like a madmen as its prime ingredients. Yes, this is bad ass stew filled with hot peppers and 53 species of a certain type of mushroom. And this might sound like it’s a highly dangerous brew; it is just as addictive and makes you want to walk the tightrope guzzling the good stuff. Wicked! All that’s left to do is kick a Mariachi in the nuts, steal his sombrero and tequila and ride of on your donkey laughing wildly as the sun sets over the disturbing scene you created…

The Broken Harvest – Against The Grain EP

The Broken Harvest – Against The Grain EP
Quarter Horse Records – 2014
Rock, Hard, Country, Americana
Rated: ***

Wanna hear what our comrade and former Karma to Burn and Year Long Disaster bass player is up to nowadays? Well, Rich Mullins is knee deep in hay and bourbon, working on new stuff with Billy Brent Malkus from Texas Sapphires under the moniker The Broken Harvest. Filling in on drums for this pure guitar based honky Tonkin power rocking trio is Scott Matthews from The Derailers. Together they’ve formed a posse that is riding high on a dusty trail that might lead to the Treasure Of The Sierra Madre. But if not; they will still fill the air with great music for steamy backyard parties when the summer is breathing fire and the coals are white hot. It’s Crazy Horse Neil Young, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard influenced by punk and eighties craziness. Don’t worry; those are just the little sparkle points among four bourbon soak Americana tracks that rock hard and will rock your chair even harder. Now crack open a bottle, sit back and hope that little breeze doesn’t die down…

Another Man’s Gold – Don’t Be Fooled

Another Man’s Gold – Don’t Be Fooled
Self released – 2014
Rock, Grunge, Pop, Funk, Blues, Desert
Rated: ***

They hail from Vancouver, Canada and sound as wild, warm and wonderful as anything coming out of the desert. They’ve named themselves Another Man’s Gold and apart from a few moments they have very little to do with stoner or desert rock; but they do sound sandy and incredibly wide. You can just see the endless horizon and the starry skies at night when you listen to an amazing track like The Moon And Haunted Bones. It sort of sits dead center on the debut album Don’t Be Fooled by these four freaks and serves together with the interlude that came before it as a tipping point. Where we were treated to alternative rock and grunge with a funky pop feel on the first four songs. The next ones are more laidback, lazy and out there… Among the cacti and beasts who can sit still and loose themselves in the wonderful view.  It’s hard to believe it’s the same band and that the boys been collecting their music in different industrial areas and dusty warehouses. For it sounds so open and spacious. Well, let’s just state the obvious: Don’t Be Fooled contains inspired passion and craftsmanship that has endless possibilities as a starting point. So it’s only right to ask; we’ve witnessed the start of something great; what comes next?

Gingerpig - Nothing

Gingerpig -Nothing

Video for Nothing, a song which can be heard on the second album Hidden From View by Dutch formation Gingerpig. It also introduces Steff Gubbels as their new bassplayer...

Gingerpig – Hidden From View

Gingerpig – Hidden From View
Suburban – 2013
Rock, Hard, Prog
Rated: ****

Their debut album The Ways Of The Gingerpig by Boudewijn Bonebakkers new outfit Gingerpig was a classy and successful adventure into the world of classic hardrock, blues, seventies rock and progressive currents. And as lover of those golden eras you could taste the pure love the guys themselves have for that time period with ever note and every melody. So after that first album; we could only wait for the next one and hope it would be just as good. Especially when news came of the departure of organ man Jarno van Es. What would that do to the sound? Well, Hidden From View continues on where the debut left us. The trio has once again delivered damn fine songs which are once again dyed with Hammond, jazzy drum fills and groovy percussion. The biggest difference is probably the feeling of the songs; much more concrete and less jammy. Even though their eclectic nature has not diminished one bit. With Run they start their raid, Nothing is the hard rocking winner and closing track Ugly Heart is the shiny black prize in the end. Brilliant!

And now we can only wait once more for their new stuff. This time around bassist Sytse Roelevink has left the band and Stef Gubbels from !Pendejo! has joined the band. What will that do?

Dario Mars and the Guillotines - Black Soul

Dario Mars and the Guillotines - Black Soul
Ván – 2014
Rock, Psych, Sixties, Seventies, Surf, Soul
Rated: ****

Did you ever wish you woke up still drunk on the bar of the Titty Twister and not your local hangout? Have you ever longed for even more dangerous and dark drinking holes where the beer tasted like mescal and looked like it too.  Where the old wrestler type lady behind the bar could just as easily be a dude and the entire night you’re there she never once lights up a new cigar stump. And something perilous and shady drifts through the air. Well, give the album Black Soul by Dario Mars and The Guillotines a listen and you’ll be right there before the second track starts. The record works as a perfect soundtrack to one of those crazy nights; a movie never made by Tarantino or someone else for that matter. Rattling sixties and seventies mixed with surf influences and dark dark dark soul. It burns a hole right through your wrist and puts the whisky in yer belly in flames. And the man behind it all is Renaud Mayeur who you might know from his little stint with Triggerfinger when he fell in for van Bruystegem. Or from his own damn fine rock outfit Hulk (Or Hulkk) with whom he recorded in Rancho De La Luna or from the equally amazing Les Anges or the stunning La Muerte. Yes, he is a busy little fucker and with Dario Mars he has produced an excellent psychedelic film noir extravaganza that is as sinister as it is mysterious. So put yer head on the chopping block and get wicked!
