Last Wednesday our bass player entered the rehearsal space with the proclamation that one of the top albums of 2012 had just been released. Less stoner, sludge and doom as their self titled 2009 album and much more metal and speed, he proclaimed with great relish. And he was right on the money. Behold! The Monolith has provided us with a king hell of a metal album that mostly uses sludge and doom for the dark atmosphere, traditional passages, accents and even uses a bit of trash for structuring and speed. Defender, Redeemist is the ominous title given to this gnashing and crippling power trip. And as power trios go; these guys belong to the heaviest of the heavy. And their relentless grunting and growling drags you with them on their plain of cumbrous rock. It begs for a long and hardy trek through their wasteland soundscape to fully appreciate their brute force. Behold, Behold! The Monolith, for these guys have brought to life a genuine rock colossus!

Propane Propane – Indigo
Our four Swedish friends from Propane Propane already conquered our hearts and minds with their self-titled album from 2009. Filled with heavy riffs, loads of psychedelics and grinding bass-lines it was as tasty as it gets. With their new album Indigo however, they are upping the ante. Something seems to be at stake here; as if a higher force has taken control of their instruments and guides them along a path of excellence. It sends shivers up your spine and makes you blood tingle in weird anticipation. It is as heavy and crushing as their earlier work but with more restraint and measured deliverance. It might be the substitute guitar player or it might be their growth as song smithies; but their massive fuzz sound, intense structuring and brisk but lethargic rhythms have turned into a cerulean monstrous beast. One that eats tasty things for lunch… Errgh?! Propane Propane, that savory shit that propels!

Carnaval – Tennis, Football, Basketball
Carnaval – Tennis, Football, Basketball
Self released – 2012
Rock, Stoner, Alternative, Blues
Rated: *****
Twisted memories of a drunken night in Metelkova, Ljubljana. Drinking beers and bears blood at Jalla Jalla and wandering the streets till dawn. Discovering the hometown and true spirit of Carnaval. One that knows that everything worth doing, is worth doing right. Founded in 2004 as Pinocchio Pinchball and renamed a year later they already released one demo called Knez Atula and two full-sized albums called 1 and 2. And now their third installment has risen: Tennis, Football, Basketball. Eight songs in very limited edition packaging and sold for an incredible low price. Eight tracks leaning on their very recognizable massive groove with bitter sweet languid singing and almost whispering rhythms. Intelligent structures and enough hypnotism to manipulate the mind but never become to psychedelic. Heavy stoner and groovy blues, alternative rock and instrumental madness. There’s some distinctive sadness, fatalism and ‘fuck it all’ acceptance to their music and an apparent message in it all. These guys are on a mission; please let them preach it in every dirty little bar in every stinking city in the world…

Mikirurka – I Hate You Rock ‘N Roll
After the incredible 2010 album Blood & Fire by Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster I was sure that those guys would find their way back to the top. Unfortunately it was not to be and the band dissolved. The reason for mentioning this is the fact that the Polish formation Mikirurka resembles EMBLD after being mixed in a blender with Queens Of The Stone Age and some age-old funk. Started off as a one-man project in 2005 it quickly turned into a full-fledged band around 2007 when a drummer and guitarist were found. A year later the bassist joined and after that an extra guitar player was found. The five of them decided to not follow any pre-existing road and set out to carve a niche for themselves. They combine a horrorpunk feel with some pinches of gothabilly and funk and smear that across their own variation to stoner and groovy rock. It might not be as furious as Blood & Fire, but definitely as exciting, chaotic and manic; and it will weaken your mind but strengthen your heart!

Franckie IV Fingers – Shut Up And Drive
Frankie fucking four fingers has a stone the size of a fist! And the French freaks from Franckie IV Fingers have pure gold in the form of highly addictive angry rock! Founded in 2008 in a town called Montpellier the four guys recorded their first album Shut Up And Drive last year. Taking inspiration from Queens Of The Stone Age, Motörhead, Foo Fighters and AC/DC. It’s an ode to all eighties and nineties heavy rock. Cause these freaks have squeezed every full power riff they could muster into ten tracks that swing like a mad roller coaster ride. It has the energy of a buffalo on speed and beats every song with absolute efficiency into your skull. And their apparent disorder in rhythm and structure adds to the irresistible charm of all these fast-driving tunes. Get this album, turn up the volume and enjoy the hell out of it. It is a safe bet; but be careful… Cause you know what happens when you start gambling with the wrong kind of people…

Kraken – Demon In The Barn
The Swedes from Kraken got together in the summer of 2010 to do some heavy rocking and space jamming. But three of them already knew each other from bands such as White Haze, Heavy Friends and Kaukasus. And after one year of constant playing and sending demo’s through the internet to each other to work on they released their first demo EP last year called Demon In The Barn. It’s another one of those pure retro diamonds. Invoking the spirit of Witchcraft, Black Sabbath and Pentagram. It falls neatly in line with other releases from 2011, keeping it more lo-fi than Graveyard and less upbeat as Lonely Kamel; making it stand out just as much as those bands did. With a perfect balance between tight riffs that sound fresh and an absolute swinging bass they have produced seven tracks that are mesmeric and border on epic. And then there are the, from time to time, slightly off key, out of tune and therefor brilliant and enchanting vocals; which gives it even more authenticity. This needs vinyl… And fast!

A righteous honorary logo designed by non-other than our very own GuestDuder! Maybe we need to set him to work on something even more weird, strange and elaborate! Kudos and many thanks amigo! Hell, after this kind of gift I’m even considering going back into the black market business of selling dolphins and used vacuum cleaners out of the trunk of my car so that I can repay you…

Black Nova – II
The German stoner group Black Nova, hailing from the dark and bloody grounds of Bavaria was formed by two members who crawled from the ashes of Treetone and released a highly entertaining demo called Black Sessions in 2007 after which things got a bit quiet revolving these pistoleros. But we are happy to report the guys are back and ready for action with a second EP neatly entitled II. It’s fast driving and high rolling stoner rock in the spirit of Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age, Nebula, Fu Manchu and all that good stuff originating from the Desert. It’s creepy tight riffing on a gigantic groove blasted open by a dragging or pounding drum and wicked vocals. And these guys know exactly when to pull back on the gas and let that dry air atmosphere seep through before going full throttle again. II is a continuation of their Black Sessions, dynamic by default and heavy laden with those rolling fuzzballs we all love so well. Black Nova, remember that name!

Firelord – The Burning
On a cold day in Turin, Italy in 2007 the guys from the doom metal project Saint Judas decided to call it quits. Not long after singer and guitar player Mario starts a new band called Firelord which quickly turns into a four-piece playing covers and some demo tunes inspired by bands such as Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Earthride and Gates of Slumber. But it’s not until the beginning of 2011 before a stable power trio line-up is found and their taste for heavy 70’s and 80’s rock evolves into their own sound. Taking queues from their inspirations and the old blues roots we are treated to some mastered version of the pure and steady riff. Without trying to innovate or re-invent the music that already was done right, they take us on a ride with heaviness and righteousness. Dark rhythms and dusty guitars; it spooks and it crawls and shows us once again that the old blood is as warm as ever…

Daishi – La Boom
By some form of ancient disembodied voice from a distant past we are sucked into the music the Austrian born Daishi delivers on their 2011 record La Boom. Started as a trio around Salzburg in 2005 it evolved over the years into a heavy rocking quartet that translates universal truths into a majestic symphony. From subtle tone experiments and lazy rhythms to sincere rock explosions and metal salvos. And like those casual sound shifts, like the endless and slow move of the earth’s plates, the vocals also move very subtle from that disembodied start to full power to gritty and fierce. Six songs lasting thirty minutes show us a band that philosophizes and knows how to interpret that wisdom for a modern age. And above all it shows us proficiency and a very eclectic mindset. We bow our head for Grand Master Daishi… (That’s a contamination, you muppet!)

Doctor Cyclops – The Doctor Cyclops
Founded in 2007 in Bosmenso Italy, Doctor Cyclops is keeping it’s one eye on the ball while juggling all the heavy stuff that has been out there since the magical riff was born. Releasing their first EP The Personal Demon(s) in 2009 and re-releasing it the following year with an added extra live track under the title: The Doctor Cyclops. It uses a dark and twisted atmosphere as a fluid base and swims through the currents of seventies psychedelic rock, proto-stoner and retro doom. It gushes and it flows and washes over you like a warm wave of old school progressive rock. With a vintage sound the good Doctor smites us with five incredible tracks that are in line with their heroes: Truth and Janey, Sir Lord Baltimore, Captain Beyond, Witchfinder General, Witchcraft, Firebird, Cathedral and Spiritual Beggars. High five this circle-eyed freak! It’s all happening man! It’s all happening!

Los Disidentes del Sucio Motel vs Flashfalcon - East side story
Deadlight / Domino Media – 2012
Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****
Last year Los Disidentes del Sucio Motel already treated us to some grade a rocking with their impressive album Soundtrack For The Motion Picture. And now they are back; and with some extra help. The guys decided to record a split album with their friends Flashfalcon who are also from France. Both providing four tracks for their version of the East Side Story; one of which is a cover of the other bands work. We get some straight up no nonsense approach stoner rock from Los Disidentes and with even less nonsense heavy pub rock from Flashfalcon. It’s high-energy rock ‘n roll without mucking about. It’s a high stakes game, betting more than you have in your pocket, fucking the consequences and let the dice fall where they may. Indeed; Los Disidentes and their comrades provides us once again with a soundtrack for one freakishly heavy night! Be ready to fight!

Feuerzeug – Dead Wahines And Tsunamis
In 2009 the Swiss formation Feuerzeug surprised almost everyone at the end of the year with an amazing album called Drive Fast And Crash!. So when the release of their sophomore album was announced at the end of 2011 I expected them to reign supreme in the Ultimate Stoner HiVe Top 20 of 2011. But no, it was not to be. For the album did not escape their own clutches until the clock had struck twelve and fireworks lit up the sky. Enticed by a video teaser such as Release The Kraken; everyone ached to hear Dead Wahines And Tsunamis. The wait is almost over. And until that day we have a three-track sampler as a pacifier. But these songs do not sooth the inner demon; but awakes that beast within and shows it a damn good time with some incredibly massive riffs, heavy hitting monstrous drums and masterful basswork. It is true; great things deserve the wait!
Pothead – Grassroots
The Pothead story continues on without relent. A year after the 1999 Fairground album they re-released their Burning Bridges EP and immediately after that in 2001 we were treated to a new full-sized album called Grassroots. It revisits their roots as the title might have already pointed at and shows us that there are only a few real survivors of the grunge-era. With a mighty groove and ditto basswork; razor-sharp riffs and straight up power drumming the albums rolls over you like a massive snowball. And it seems to get bigger and larger with every consecutive listening session. It’s that slow gin sinking to your stomach and making it all warm and fuzzy within. And are once again the vocals are the absolute icing on the cake. After which it took no shorter than two years before a new record saw the light of day. On Tuf Luv from 2003 they took their own cake, sliced it, diced it and ate it too. It’s heavy laden with meaning and intensity, it grinds and grates and shows their eclectic influences. Top Pothead albums for every head out there…

Pothead – Learn to Hypnotize!
Pothead’s Learn To Hypnotize! album from 1997 is viewed by fans and critics alike as a true masterpiece and a musical landmark. The record is made up out their snappy and dry version of stonerrock on one side and their meditative melodies and rhythms on the other side. Spiced up with an incredible ability to tell strong stories in a very distinct voice. And their aptitude in creating sophisticated arrangements with intelligent breaks and dust-dry signature riffs. The record is almost completely made up out of laid-back grooves, and is therefore the perfect album for a lazy Sunday or a night full of creativity. The few harder explosions are a welcome wake-up call to the otherwise extremely hypnotic nature of the record. The follow-up EP Pot of Gold from 1998 came after an extensive battle with the record company, which ended up shelving the never released album Flubber Soul. And even though Fairground from 1999 had the biggest recording budget and was probably produced in the most extensive way; it suffered from way too much sound compression and therefore the sound got lost in the void. And above all; both never equaled Learn To Hypnotize…

Pothead - Rumely Oil Pull
Naming your second album after a line of farm tractors from 1910-1930 is definitely a statement; and it must have meant that they dug the possibilities of less aggressive rock, slowly advancing and more in tune with nature. And so after the brothers moved Pothead to Berlin they started work on their second album with the help of a drum computer. Which they ofcourse hated and so they put an add in the local newspaper. Through which they found their full time drummer Sebastian Meyer. And so it was time to continue on; slowly. Rumely Oil Pull is the result of those discoveries. A steady head bang march across the land with much more melody and less punk. It varies between high-spirited mellow grunge and wide horizon stoner. It’s for the minds that work overtime and for the thoughts that are never in any way complacent. And the fine balance between the constant improvement and their own sound continued on for the next two albums Dessicated Soup and Burning Bridges. Where Soup incorporated more blues and Bridges more classic rock. And cemented their place in rock history…

Pothead – USA!
In 1990 two Seattle brothers went on holiday through Europe. Partially because they needed a break from the music scene back home. Partially because they needed a break from their own bands. Totally smitten with Berlin they decided to stay there. But they kept travelling across Europe and in Spain they come across the punk band The Accused. They dug the style and their DIY attitude. And only a few months later they started their band Pothead. Their first album USA! was meant as a demo record to procure gigs around Europe. With a different selection they jammed around and ended up in a studio to record USA! on various occasions and with different players. It’s a hard-hitting record without relent. It was meant to be heavy and straightforward; easy to play for anyone entering the band on a spur moment. It kept in vein with the punk spirit at the time and it was a question of pure survival. Getting gigs and staying alive. It was the last song of the album that actually got everyone’s attention. Child was recorded by ‘accident’ and was the first of their down-tuned, slower tracks. Double Black was added later on as last track and has that same feel as Child; new possibilities and less aggressive!
Van Halen - Tattoo
It was quite some time ago now that the rumors started flying around about a Van Halen reunion. They were ofcourse always around; but this time it sounded like something might actually happen. And apparently the album A Different Kind Of Truth is finished, and their performance last week was smashing according to the people there and now there's also a new video to prove the stories about not being able to play anymore to be unfounded. Another reunion tour heading your way this spring!

Go Bananas – I No Seas
Go Bananas was founded in the year of our lord 2007 in a dusty little drinking hole in the suburbs of Salzburg, Austria. Five crazy guys that enjoy their drink and never take things too serious decided to start jamming together; henceforth the naming of the band was easy. And their style came naturally as well and remains to this day: all over the place. The main dominator is heavy rock though; infused with stoner elements, metal passages and psychedelic structures. Their first album was released in the summer of 2011. It sometimes reminds of Monster Magnet or Black Sabbath, and other times it’s more like Thin Lizzy, AC/DC or even Colour Haze. But above all the sheer fun and love for the music shines through. They got their driving rhythms down, the fuzzadelic guitarsound and their steady drums. The lyrics are fun and even if the vocals could use a little work; it has spirit and conveys their primal emotion with pure excellence: Go Bananas!

Ocean Mind – Ocean Mind EP
We are talking powertrio here. A Greek powertrio to be precise. Ocean Mind was formed the beautiful city of Athens in the spring of 2008 with a pure longing for performing some heavy psychedelic rock music in the vein of The Doors, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. It definitely has that psychedelic and progressive sound but also incorporates loads of present day influences to make it sound shiny and new. They make every track come across as a sun blistered journey towards an unknown destination; but one that has to be made. They love their squealing guitars and rumbling drums. Their new album is tighter, harder and more mature then their first record Alone We Walk, Together We Fly from 2009. Maybe thanks to the help of producer Lee Popa who helped out during the recording sessions in Los Angeles. No gadgets, no trickery; pure and unadulterated rock!

Self released – 2011
Electronic, Metal, Doom, Noise, Experimental
Rated: * or ****
Residing in the wonderful country of Mexico where you can buy everything you need for your sexual adventures from a great guy who owns the Holland Sex Shop in Veracruz. There is also a weird little band called Pr0 Tone that has self released two EP’s called Micro.01 and Micro.02. Highly experimental and full of breakbeat noise and electronic doom sequences. This is definitely something for the trained ear; and not for the amateur longing for an hour of pure relaxation in the sun with cocktail in hand and beautiful ladies wearing skimpy outfits bringing you a new drink whenever you are almost done. No; you will either love this to bits or hate almost every second of it. It does make one wonder how a warm and sunny country can bring forth this kind of soundtrack for a twisted, dark and blackened industrial landscape.

The Barbarellatones – The Legend of Skunk Ape
Self released – 2011
Rock, Glam, Freak, Goth, Country, Glitter
Rated: ***
It’s cold and windy out here, the rain is hammering down and the land is on the verge of a flood. In these times of distress you need something to keep you warm. And that’s where The Barbarellatones come in handy. As freaky as freaks can be and as lovely and animalistic as a freshly washed poodle. There’s nothing wrong with these surfing Eskimos. They profess their love with the utmost of glee and cheerful detachment. The Legend Of Skunk Ape is a one-track legendary tale of masterful precision; lacking nothing and sparkling with enthusiasm. It makes you long for those swampy nights filled with hairy beasts and distant relatives wearing wolf masks. Inviting the local farmers to join in, in some sick and twisted ritual on a worn down sacrificial slab. Although after picturing that image just now; it might be better to just go back to rehab. This here song; and their new video posted below must surely turn all you freaks out there on and wish for something more substantial from frontman Robbie Quinn; maybe something on the subject of the Sound of Love…

Zippo – Maktub
It happens as it is written. I’ve never been one to hide my love for the heaviness of the riff, the bands that provide it and the different genres they may belong to. But the Italian five-piece going by the name Zippo is not an easy taste to acquire. Their first two records Ode To Maximum from 2006 and The Road To Knowledge from 2008 were already highly progressive and experimental sludge adventures. Intensely dynamic and utterly shifting between desert stoner and studio metal, heavy and hard in every way. When I saw the title of their new album released last year I was giddy with glee like a sixteen-year-old cheerleader looking to get her cherry popped. Maktub: the old Arabic proverb for ‘It Is Written’. And before we end up with a rant about Taoism, Alchemic laws and Hopi tales to counter the sixteen-year-old cheerleader remark, let’s us quickly go forth with the music. On their new record the Zippo masters have taken their progressive roots to an almost mathematical level and managed to keep even this; slightly psychedelic. A little breathing space added from here to there makes it all sound less clustered and gives the brutal riffs afterwards that extra barbaric feel. Emotional vocals, technical bass-work and excellent guitar-lines take you on a lengthy almost mythical journey and speak of what was known from the start. It’s not the destination but the journey towards it that counts…

And of course with the amount it got voted for as a number one behind it. There were a few lists that were sent in by a few of you lovely freaks out there that felt that they could not say which of the albums was better. Which is highly understandable and perfectly justifiable. But they were therefor not labeled as a number one. And henceforth not incorporated here. Holding the Red Lantern; the ones that received one point and one point only; the ones that got voted for only once and on the 20th position of a sent in list. Cause not everyone was able to list exactly twenty albums. Or only felt twelve of them made the grade this year. Or maybe because there were so many great releases this year or maybe it was because it escaped most of everyone’s attention or maybe they are on the fringe of this thing we call rock in honor of the pure heaviness of the riff… Whatever the reason, they still got one point in this 2011 edition of the Stoner HiVe countdown…
