Void Generator – Prodromi

Void Generator – Prodromi
Phonosphera – 2017
Rock, Space, Kraut, Prog, Psych, Instrumental
Rated: ***

Yikes, open sourced recordings are dangerous to just put out there. You might mistake its galactic feedback noises for something unintentional, weird, crazy or even other worldly. Well, Void Generator does this on purpose. The Italian project releases four tracks titled Prodromi and will have you surfing along the cosmic vibrations in no time. We call it an instrumental release, which it is not. But because of its open mic recording, the vocals are barely audible. There is no denying that the tracks are there. Four damn fine progressive, krautish, psychedelic rockers. But the lo-fi sound does not help the band here. You will definitely immediately long to hear them live. As much as you will immediately long to hear a better recording of this. I’m not quite sure why they wanted to go this route. It makes their earlier Supersound release, properly recorded, sound errr, super. So why did they not just opt for the same production now? Sure, they might have picked up some of the sounds of creation, noises of the universe and resonances of everything. But to truly hear all of the oscillations you will need an orgone accumulator. And well, unfortunately, we’re out of those at the moment…

Vvlva – Path To Virtue

Vvlva – Path To Virtue
World In Sound – 2018
Rock, Hard, Psych, Prog, Kraut, Seventies
Rated: *****

Where you also amazed, wowed and enchanted by that three track EP Shaking Bones released by Vvlva in 2016? Well, we were. We were right there with them, kandy-kolored, elektrik and kool-aid guzzling! From those first seventies inspired tones to that final abrupt ending we were on board with Vvlva and loved their psychedelic hardrock. It had everything we love so dearly and we were longing to hear more. Well, here it is! The new album Path To Virtue will be released on February 16th and is one magical carpet ride! It is one big ‘yeah!’ and ‘groovy!’ from beginning to end. And it is one big psychedelic prog record like the greats of yore used to make. It sounds grandiose and gigantic in all its efforts. See me waving my arm around, gesturing like madman! You can't help it! This really makes you all warm and fuzzy inside! Giddy with glee! And as mentioned it is much more progressive than their earlier EP. Making every repeated listening session a new and colorful experience! It’s all happening man! Path To Virtue is the yellow brick road everybody needs to start walking. It will lead you to the majestic castle, and there, the show shall commence in all its glory! Path Of Virtue is the soundtrack to everything wild and wonderful you can imagine!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 artists listened to last week...

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 artists listened to last week...
After one completely packed week where we had little time to listen to the good stuff, we had some catching up to do. So, a lot of records got spun at least once. But the next five were on repeat the rest of the time. The debut effort Serrated by An Evening With Knives. We had to be able to sing along during the official album release party at the Area51 Skatepark last Friday. A great freakin night it was and an amazing album it is! Get your hands on Serrated and spin it loud! It has only been a few weeks that Ozium Records re-released Mad Marco, de debut effort by Avon. But Dave’s Dungeon, the sophomore release by the Alfredo Hernandez, James Childs and Charles Pasarell trio will be out on Heavy Psych Sounds in a few weeks. It is even better! On all fronts. What a ride! Another one on heavy rotation is Da Captain Trips. Their Adventures In The Upside Down came out a few months ago via Phonosphera. A majestic trip if ever there was one! Madness Is Too Pure released by The Sign Records is Swedish outfit MaidaVale’s second effort and is intensely atmospheric, with much more psychedelic and krautrock touches in respect to their first record. And well, it’s magnificent! Colorful melodies and crazy like glittering seventies gold! Remember Primoridal Soup by Olmeg? We loved their outsider approach to sludge, stoner, psych and space! Well, the cats are back with an eight-track record called Maladies. Which of course had to spun immediately! And so, should you! Perhaps grungier and a bit grimier, they still move outside the common realm. It crosses boundaries and defies frontiers. Yes, it’s Olmeg and they are radical and sick!

Da Captain Trips – Adventures In The Upside down

Da Captain Trips – Adventures In The Upside down
Phonosphera – 2017
Rock, Kraut, Space, Psych, Instrumental
Rated: ****

What lies before us, is a trip to the dangerous side. Are you prepared for Adventures In The Upside Down?! The instrumental Italian outfit Da Captain Trips released their sophomore album in the middle of 2017 and it is a damn fine expedition. So, bring your lengths of rope, pickaxes, shovels, knives and a towel, we are off on an adventure. Even though we might be heading for outer space for a lot of cosmic travelling, every planet we visit, every dimension we encounter, has different sets of reality that will require your very own fantasy to manifest itself upon its surroundings. Worldly and outer worldly, the seven tracks meander through all these incredible enchantments. Yes, we are going overboard with the ‘weirdness’, ‘out there’ and ‘cuckoo cuckoo’ chatter again. But that is what Da Captain Trips does to ya and even more so on Adventures In The Upside Down. Cause even though it definitely is one gigantic trip, the album is also cut from imagination itself and cut down to seven bitesize chunks of dream music. Either that, or the kool aid I was drinking was laced with something incredibly potent… So, you’d better bring Da Captain something good, climb on board, and rest assured… For in the way Da Captain smokes you know we will reach port…

An Evening With Knives live at Area51, Eindhoven

An Evening With Knives live at Area51, Eindhoven
Album release party 27-01-18

Area51 in Eindhoven is home to one of the biggest indoor skateparks of Europe. What a wonderful place to hold an album release party for three good ol’ boys from Eindhoven with some new massive tunes. We are talking about An Evening With Knives who wanted to celebrate the release of their full-sized debut album Serrated. An album that took its time to appear. Cause even though the crowdfunding project to get the thing sponsored was filled quickly; the band took its time. It even, for a moment, looked like a ‘take the money and run’ kind of deal. But in all seriousness, the drummer Ivo Jonkers, got badly injured during the celebratory night in honor of collecting enough dough to start recording. After hospitalization, it took quite some time before his knee was good enough again to start drumming. But now. Looking out across a sold-out crowd in Area51, the three boys can only smile and realize that they made it. Overcoming these difficulties only made the Serrated record better and improved An Evening With Knives to a serious degree…

But before we are treated to some words of thanks and the new AEWK tunes we are treated to some heavy ruckus by Offerblok (Pronunciation: off her block. With a silent H.) Also, in part, from Eindhoven Rockcity this five-piece aims for the absolute dark heart of the sun. Doom, post and sludge metal, but with a black and dismal soul. The short set wavers between an intense, almost ritualistic experience and attention loss. For even though we never want musicians to take themselves too seriously, this kind of music usually benefits from seriousness. But of course, this is not an Offerblok show, but An Evening With Knives party, and therefor we forgive them all the smiles and laughs and jokes and just nod our heads to some damn fine twisted tunes and growling vocals….

And now for the bad news. We love Area51. The skatepark, the bar, the concert hall. It’s all good. But what’s up with the horrible beer? Goddamn. I had to try them all to find out there is not one good tasting option. And what was that completely pervasive smell? A sort of bitter honey scented tea smell? Was that also due to the beer? Or did a keg of tea get thrown into the ventilation system?

Two minor points for an otherwise splendid venue and great night. An Evening With Knives gave us a damn fine set of older tunes and new ones. Their very own style of highly atmospheric almost emotional metal which rubs up against post metal and grabs some fine parts from sludge and doom is a very deep and intense ride. Slow dragging riffs and beautiful melodies trade places with thundering rumbles and murky tones. Just as much as the howls from vocalist Marco Gelissen battle with different layers of heaviness. It is highly admirable how these tracks all seem to exhume some sort of existential pain, anger or fear while still retaining some small glimmer of light. It’s hard to pick favorites during the set. All of them seem to have their merits. But as a fellow fan  stated at one point during the show, ‘Blind’s Man Guess is such an amazing song’. So we might be tempted to pick that one. For it is very true statement, but soon after came a new one that was just as good or even better. I think it was Fade Out. It definitely gave us the best view of the night; Matthijs Kropff, the Lighttown Fidelity owner, that puts out the vinyl, going absolutely wild to the track. That’s what we like to see and that’s what it’s all about. Love for music! And it speaks out in every fiber of the AEWK spirit. Yes, three good ol’ boys with some freaking great tunes. A very great way to celebrate the release of Serrated, which we will start spinning immediately!

Rodeo Drive – No Second Chance

Rodeo Drive – No Second Chance
Self released – 2017
Rock, Stoner, Grunge, Fuzz
Rated: ****

We never got around to mentioning Morbid Beauty back in 2014. The debut release by German outfit Rodeo Drive. Well, the trio is back now, with a three track EP called No Second Chance. Well, it is in fact our second chance to get the word out on this hefty ramshackle fuzz rock stoner team! A team that features on bass and vocals Hans Eiselt from Samsara Blues Experiment. (Who released that damn fine One With The Universe album that ended high in the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2017 thanks to all the voters.) I guess the Samsara Blues creeps wherever the Samsara Blues wants to creep; even though this time around the cat does get more dusty, creepy, grimy and grungy. Less spacey and less psychedelic as one might expect the trio works up quite the appetite for dirty stuff in the first two tracks. Which finds its much more groovy and funky release in the final Black Satire track. Which also definitely meanders on the soiled side of the street. I guess the Samsara Blues not only loves outer space, but also loves the gutter!

Emperor Guillotine – Robot Monster

Emperor Guillotine – Robot Monster
Self released – 2018
Doom, Stoner, Heavy Rock
Rated: ****

Emperor Guillotine is the brainchild of Dallas, Texas native Ben Randolph. Studying music for most of his life, he writes and records out of his home studio. Spending his teen years and early twenties going through a succession of bands that were disorganized, lacking focus, not very good or (usually) a combination of all of those traits, he decided to strike out on his own and do what he wanted. Influenced by classic heavy metal such as Black Sabbath, Ben created the Emperor Guillotine project to create music that reflects the purity, darkness and heaviness of the albums such as Master of Reality, Vol 4 and Sabotage. More modern influences include The Sword, Earth, Elder and Orchid. Unless otherwise noted, Ben does all writing, recording, programming, mixing and mastering for Emperor Guillotine. This mainly instrumental album, Robot Monster, plays like a soundtrack to an imaginary early 60’s film about the dangers of drug use and how the ‘kids’ were going feral from too much of the good stuff! Down-tuned stoner riffs rub shoulders with doomy compositions that are helped in no end by excellent use of vocal samples, slowed down and distorted into slurring narratives. Heavily fuzzed passages are relentlessly played over riffs that are made to get your head nodding. Screaming solos come in with a real ‘70’s style vibe that suits perfectly. Emperor Guillotine have produced a collection of tracks that should please anyone who worships the riff. And because they are good guys, it is name your price on Bandcamp.

Weedpecker – III

Weedpecker – III
Stickman Records - 2018
Stoner, Psychedelic Rock, Heavy Rock
Rated: ****

The Polish trippin’ stoners start off 2018 with an impressive release. On III, the four-piece group from Warsaw conjure dreamy psychedelic soundscapes and melodic fuzzed out riffs into a blissful, swirling haze.  And for once, the over used term “psychedelic” really applies here. This is a trip into a sonic landscape that made me forget the outside world and found me immersed on the journey that Weedpecker were taking me. Heavy when it needs to be, the riffs are natural and unforced and with great song compositions, the different tones and colours used really gel into a stunning album. Not since “A Storm In Heaven” by The Verve have I been transported to a place where I can escape to for 45 mins...

Kayleth – Colossus

Kayleth – Colossus
Argonauta Records - 2018
Stoner, Space, Rock
Rated: ****

Italian space rockers Kayleth have an almighty epic record on their hands. Like the bastard son of Orange Goblin and Monster Magnet, this album sets out for outer space with heavy riffs, plenty of fuzz and enough attitude to destroy anything that stands in their way. Understated synth playing gives a sparkle and sheen to the song compositions without becoming just annoying “spacey sounds”. Yep, of course the lyrics are sci-fi themed but at the heart of things, Kayleth play heavy rock like it should be played – you know the score by now ….. big sound, massive production, meaty riffs and it fills me with the urge to stomp my feet and nod my head like a metronome running on bad drugs. Blast off with “Colossus”!

Avon – Mad Marco

Avon – Mad Marco
Ozium Records – 2017
Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****

We've seen the different Kyuss members surface here, there or everywhere. But Alfredo Hernández was probably one of the more elusive ones. He did wild stints and wonderful things with loads of different projects. But nothing could really be called as his very own outlet; which might be a drummers curse. Brave Black Sea almost filled that spot; but was shortlived. Or was it? But immediately after came Avon. Featuring James Childs (Airbus, Lakota) and Charles Pasarell (Waxy, Lakota) with whom he already played on a couple of Vic Du Monte records. Is it an Alfredo project or a true three-piece if ever there was one. Well, they will soon release their new record Dave's Dungeon through Heavy Psych Sounds. So, the band is definitely on a roll! And their 2016 released record Mad Marco was a definite bullseye shot. And guess what, the righteous Ozium Records label took it upon themselves to spread the word even wider. A limited edition re-release with one extra track for those who missed out the first time around. A blue instead of a red cover; but with every dusty desert track still proudly rocking its majestic heritage. Seminal stoner that borders on the atavistic, but with enough psychedelic touches and pop sensible hooks to make you bop and nod. The groove runs deep and riffs flow like a cool breeze through the hot air. They are the best of the best and that is clearly audible on all the twelve tracks. The ending bonus track called Voidtronix is dreamy, atmospheric and has you on edge for the duration; waiting for a release. Waiting...  But it is Mad Marco! And Mad Marco does whatever the hell he wants!

Zom – Nebulos

Zom – Nebulos
Argonauta Records - 2018
Heavy Rock Stoner
Rated: ****

I like fuzz. I like it on my breakfast, I like it in my drinks. Hell, I like fuzz in my pants and in my head. Do I love fuzz more than my family? Hard to say. But fuzz has never made me get up at 3.00am because it heard a sound downstairs or announced on Sunday evening that a school project needs to be finished - you decide. Needless to say, Zom like a lot of fuzz. Fusing all that is great about dirty stoner rock’n’roll, they sound like the satan-spawned bastard offspring between Stoner, Hard Rock and attitude - which is to say fucking brilliant. This is punk blues powered by high octane riffs that are cranked out with scant disregard for niceties, urged on by a cleanish vocal style that has a passionate and urgent rasp to it. Precision, scalpel sharp solos are strewn over the songs in all the right places, giving you a collection of tunes that demand to be played again and again. And for a bonus in this day and age of heavier than thou, someone has remembered to write tracks with decent hook-lines that make the whole Nebulos album scream by in a satisfying blur of foot-stomping thuggery.
