Battle Elk – Songs For Heroes

Battle Elk – Songs For Heroes
Self released – 2015
Rock, Blues, Classic, Prog, Ok fuck it, Stoner
Rated: ****

Next up at the HiVe we've got a duo out of Magnor, Norway  with their new EP; Songs  for heroes by Battle Elk. The first track on the record called Shield  wall was an instant attention grabber for me. Where were the heavy massively fuzzed out guitars? Where was Ozzy? Who cares! These guys don't need ‘em. The track is bluesy and has a hint of the outlaw western theme. I personally love that shit! The next tune is just as good with the exception that it is a little more progressive and less western. Both members sing on the album and their voices meld quite well. The guitar playing is well orchestrated throughout the record, but they do utilize some good programming and/or synth on the record. That fact makes me curious to see how they would pull off a live show… Although I could care less at this moment cause I'm too busy enjoying the sweet sound of their last track Black Sector Highway. This record is for the "drift away crowd". It's bluesy, progressive and mellow all at the same time. So grab yourself a cloud and tune into Battle Elk. Great Job guys. I really enjoyed it.

Imperial State Electric – Honk Machine

Imperial State Electric – Honk Machine
Suburban/Psychout – 2015
Rock, Garage
Rated: ****

We ofcourse know the Swede Nicke Andersson from his marvelous work with Entombed and the Hellacopters. But he has been duking it out now for a couple of years with his new project Imperial State Electric. And on their fourth album Honk Machine they even manage to almost put their already awesome previous record Reptile Brain to shame. This is grade a garage that manages to just as easily change color to sixties pop influences or seventies hardrock and spice it all up with some soulful ballads and impress with all of them. There are so many great avenues, approaches and ideas on this one record it simply amazes. And with a tight and crisp production sound you never have this retro sentiment but always the feeling of that green light on the horizon. As if the sun is rising on a great day and there is even more Imperial State Electric beauty waiting just around the corner. Sheer blissful enjoyment!

Cavalli – Cavalli

Cavalli – Cavalli
Self released – 2015
Rock, Hard, Psych, Prog, Punk
Rated: ****

Holy prog-punk batman!! I've just discovered the Cavalli Ep by Cavalli! I must start by saying I've never heard these guys before, but wished I had sooner. This sounds to me (at least on record) to be a bands band. What's a bands band you may ask? It's a band who gives their all for the sake of the music and have a better than average playing ability. Cavalli sounds like such a band. I love the guitar craftsmanship on the record. It hits a sweet spot with some familiarity and then does a 180 into progressive Yes and Rush style playing. Same goes for the rest of the band. Drummer has a nice groove and seems more than capable of holding it down. The vocalist gives it his all and the bass playing is just as good. These guys throw an acoustic into the end of every song for good measure and to show you they mean business. I'm not saying these guys are the next Beethoven or are reinventing the wheel. But I am very impressed with these dudes from London. Cavalli by Cavalli is a well put together piece of music if I have ever heard one. I urge music fans and especially fellow musicians to give Cavalli a listen.

Clutch – Psychic Warfare

Clutch – Psychic Warfare
Weatherman – 2015
Rock, Hard, Stoner
Rated: *****

Two years ago their tenth album Earth Rocker made it all the way to the second place in the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2013. Which was yet another reason with which Clutch, who have been around since 1991, proved to be an always evolving band eager to progress. This time around however the guys seem content or even keen on deepening the sound they provided us with on that much celebrated album Earth Rocker. Their eleventh album is called Psychic Warfare and on it we hear even swampier stoner, intense blues influences and straight trucking hardrock filled with grimy guitar solos and an angry vocalist howling his truth at us. Sometimes a bit funkier and sometimes air dry and sun baked. Most impressive is probably the way they managed to make all that more enigmatic, stirring and cinematic. Songs like Our Lady Of Electric Light are meant to be used in movies, you can just see the landscape pass by and the Hateful Eight wandering off into the sunset. But don’t worry, there’s no atmospheric nonsense here; just a savage wasteland full of grit teeth and bloodshot eyes!

Undercover Rabbis – Electric Sand

Undercover Rabbis – Electric Sand
Self released – 2015
Rock, Doom, Experimental
Rated: ***

Electric Sand by Undercover Rabbis is unique to say the least. It only makes sense that these guys come from a vast wasteland of weirdness; New Jersey! (I can say this being born and raised in the great Garbage State). Opening track Rocket to space has a mystical beginning before shifting to spoken word halfway through. The song is dynamic and they keep it familiar enough to keep you engaged. Undercover Rabbis keep their experimental weirdness going right onto the track Aurora Borealis, which is something I could really get on board with. Sometimes I too have unusual taste, but I thought the song was quite good. Next cut Attilah has some nice riffage and timing changes. Vocals on the record are very theatrical in my opinion. But I'm a big fan of Ghost; and they also have what I consider to be a slight mismatch of vocals vs. music. The final song Goodbye Sky Captain is an instrumental well played and well crafted. Overall I liked the record. If you need a nice change of pace or a mystical escape check ‘em out at the bandcamp site below.

You Know Who – You Know Who

You Know Who – You Know Who
Self Destructo Records – 2015
Rock, Punk, Core, Metal, Desert
Rated: ****

Mike Pygmie on guitar and vocals, Dylan Brown on bass and vocals and Greg Saenz on drums. A veritable who is who from the Palm Desert area. Known for their work with Hermano, John Garcia, Mondo Generator, Waxy, The Dwarves and Sort Of Quartet it was only logical the guys would team up to do something right up their very own speedrock alley. So here’s You Know Who! And with it comes one hell of a sucker punch of a debut album. Low desert skater punk that knocks you straight into a corner. Think Discharge, GBH, Suicidal Tendencies and something that can only come out of that specific steamy hot area. Cause just when you think you got their act down, they dance around you with Cobra Twist or make you dizzy with Recycler. Cause it’s not just a stomp and rush, smash and grab action packed record. No, they do this majestic punk thing they do so well like true genius toreadors. Weaving and faking and grabbing airtime like crazy almost mathematical time junkies. And ofcourse there are some guest spots here and there, on the Recycler track we already mentioned we can hear Sean Wheeler, on Wastoid Nick Oliveri and on Save Me Jebus none other than John Garcia. It’s the icing on their very own speeding technical metal punk cake. You Know Who, we sure do, and they rock like a motherfucker, yes they do!

Charlie Tooth talks to Space Chant Records

Space Chant Records - Interview

There's a new label coming out of New Jersey and I believe they're gonna make a hell of a splash with their first release from the Long Beach, CA based act Plant Tribe. I was able to get a hold of Doug Gleason of Space Chant Records for a quick little Q & A.

S.H.- So Doug, how are things going and are you on target with your first release for Space Chant Records called Plant Tribe?

Doug - Things are going well. We are on target for our first release from Plant Tribe. It will be out this fall and we couldn't be more excited to bring it out and can't wait for people to hear. Not only is it our debut release, but it is their debut LP so it is real exciting for everyone.

S.H.- Plant Tribe, why Plant Tribe? How did you meet them?

Doug - Well, I found Plant Tribe while browsing on bandcamp. The name caught my attention right away along with the fantastic cover artwork for their single "Eternal Villainy". So I decided to give them a listen and their music blew me away. I thought, wow, these guys have something special. A sound you do not hear every day crafted together very well and weaving a mixture of influences and genres together to create a unique sound. So after hearing them I decided to contact them and introduce myself and the label.

S.H.- Why did you start Space Chant Records? Is it to sort of preserve rock music?

Doug - Well, yes that is one of the many focuses. I have always been a fan of many different genres of music. Rock ‘n roll has always been a favorite, all kinds, but especially the kind that expands the mind. So there is that; and also, I really believe there are quite a few special bands/artists out there who go under the radar and deserve much more exposure and recognition, even in the underground world. So the whole goal is to bring some more exposure to the music and get the music out there to many more ears.

S.H.- What was the instant, the moment in time, the conversation that prompted you to really start the label?

Doug – It was a dream of mine for a couple years before I actually went for it. But many factors came together for me to finally say I am going to do this and turn the dream into a reality. One main one was being unhappy with my current occupation. So I thought, having the record label come about would be a great way to slowly transition over to eventually working for myself. That is the long term goal. At first, not knowing where to start and feeling overwhelmed about starting it, kept me from actually starting the label. But, after doing some research and finding the right band, it came together at a great time.

S.H.- What's your background as far as music goes?

Doug - I have always been a big music fan ever since my father introduced me to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" when I was a young child. I learned a little bit of guitar and bass years ago, but never put the practice and time into it. But my interest in music has always been growing. I love seeking out and finding new music. There are many great artists and bands waiting to be discovered out there and every once in a while you will find something very special. Which is a great feeling.

S. H.- I originally discovered Space Chant Records when searching for a label for my own upcoming project. What is your demo policy, and do you encourage bands to submit material?

Doug - Space Chant does not really have a demo policy as of yet. Basically just send over a message or send a link to your music. Get in contact if you think your sound is a good fit. So we definitely encourage bands to send in material.

S.H.- Can you elaborate on what "a good fit for the label" might be? Especially for those people that haven't heard Plant Tribe yet. Maybe some examples of bands you would have signed?

Doug - Good Question! And a tough one to answer, haha. Really, I am looking for unique bands creating new psychedelic sounds. There are no boundaries or anything. I love music that makes you feel something, music that is intelligent and crafted well together. Powerful music with a message or music that you can space out to or groove to. And this all falls under the umbrella of psychedelia for the most part. Which is a pretty broad term in itself. I see psychedelia as anything that moves the mind. Some bands I really love at the moment and would love to work with would be: Electric Eye, Ecstatic Vision and The Night Beats to name a few.

S.H.- What kind of ride has it been getting Space Chant off the ground?

Doug - I must say, it has been a learning process. At first it seemed a bit overwhelming and challenging. But you take it on one step at a time and go about it intelligently. I am keeping an open mind and absorbing things I learn so that I can make it run better and smoother as time goes on.

Thank you Doug for joining us here at the Stoner HiVe. Is there anything you would like to add?

"Peace & Love brothers and sisters"!

"Thanks Doug, you too..."

Child – Healer

Child – Healer
Self released – 2015
Rock, Hard, Psych, Metal
Rated: ****

California's Child, not to be confused with the Melbourne based Child, has LA on fire and let the mutha burn. Hell yeah!!! The new LP Healer by Child is out and the shits hot. A plethora of rock, metal, doom and psych all rolled into one cool flowing record. I like how these guys link their tunes on the album via space sounding guitar and other noise much in the vein of Monster Magnet’s 1995 Dopes To Infinity. I enjoyed all the cuts on Healer, but my favorite has to be Window. My only beef would be the vocals are way to echoed/reverberated for my liking. I believe the vocalist has a better voice than he is allowing us to hear. I encourage all the fans of hard ass rock to give these guys a listen. Maybe even purchase their shit on bandcamp so we can get these filthy rockers to a more acceptable section of the valley!

Mammoth Salmon – Last Vestige Of Humanity

Mammoth Salmon – Last Vestige Of Humanity
Self Released – 2015
Doom, Sludge, Psych, Stoner
Rated: ****

Not sure what the fuck a Mammoth Salmon is but I will guess at a gigantic fish. And that applies to the riffs here – gigantic and low-end slabs of huge sounding tunes that threaten to make your brains slowly ooze out your ears. This is Doom that has enough venom and raspy vocals to veer into Sludge with vicious intent. The fuzzed bass is up front in the mix and powers the songs along as an anchor to the drums that sound like they are being attacked with hatred. The riffs are varied and never get boring. The song writing has the “Iommi” effect – 3 or 4 fantastic riffs all put together in a single track. Although the pace is quite slow, the impact of all the sonic wizardry seem to propel this album along at breakneck speed. A Stoner element creeps in with massive bursts of groove and head nodding passages that are made to stand out with fuzz box stomping solos that are simply awesome. At times the riffs drop out to a single instrument and build up with a gritty psychedelic feel aided by more well placed guitar work. After some great EPs, this band have produced their first album with all six tracks delivering something special. And because they are good guys it is pay-what-you-want from Bandcamp.

Ahab – The Boats of The Glen Carrig

Ahab – The Boats of The Glen Carrig
Napalm/PIAS – 2015
Metal, Doom, Psych, Rock
Rated: **

Melodic funeral doom with a fine psychedelic touch. That is Ahab and that is what Ahab will always be. Once again the new album The Boats Of The Glen Carrig is based upon a book. This time they took the William Hope Hodgson story with the same name from 1907 as the inspiration to build their music on. It is slow carrying music that you can easily drift away on, simply because even though they produce heavy music they do not always go for that extreme musical move. The vocals unfortunately do. At first when the voice touches you with its fragile yet wonderful melancholy you start to sway and wonder how good this piece of art will become. But when the misplaced growling starts you start howling o’ captain my captain what have they done… A fearful trip indeed. And sure, the rest of their nautical doom remains a true flagship of exploration. But why distort the calm breeze with a thundering roar when there is really not mythical beast on the horizon that needs to be slain…

Black Bottle Riot – III: Indigo Blues

Black Bottle Riot – III: Indigo Blues
Suburban/Bertus – 2015
Rock, Hard, Blues, Southern
Rated: ****

We’ve been following the Black Bottle Riot boys since 2009. And travelled with them through a great Stay Hungry EP, an amazing self-titled full-sized record and their Soul In Exile album released in 2013. They now hit us with III: Indigo Blues. Something good and tasty with the soul we heard on that Soul In Exile album but with the loose and groovy approach we loved from the debut record. There’s something furious and feisty about the way this one rolls out in front of you. The guitar seems to exhume pure passion and pleasure when it slides and weaves and glows. Real inspiring string work and it makes the entire record much more earnest. Maybe due to the hardship the boys endured, the loss of friends, jobs and even homes. It’s the blues and it shines through in the music and the vocals. It’s an album made by adversity and tears. And it’s those tears you hear in the guitar and you hear in the vocals, something we missed on the previous record. Just listen to that Southern touched Around The Sun with Paul Niehaus from Lambchop and try not to reminisce about the good ol’ days. And as icing on the cake, the track to play away the blues and to wipe away those tears, we get In Solitude, with the help from Kirk Windstein (Down, Crowbar). Hard rocking, tough metal edged aggression! And a glorious future awaits just around the corner for the Black Bottle Riot boys!

Early Mammal – Take A Lover

Early Mammal – Take A Lover
Riot Season – 2015
Rock, Psych, Hard
RateD: ****

Early Mammal’s new LP Take A Lover is a definite keeper. This record has some smooth cloud drifting jams on it along with other heavier fare to satisfy. Some of my favorite tunes are Morning which reminds of a psychedelic 70's cut  with a tinge of Jane's Addiction thrown in for good measure. The vocals on Morning are exceptional. The same holds true for Sigh On, probably my favorite song of the whole record. It's creepy, depressing and haunting. This band definitely knows how to evoke emotion. If you like really good rock and psych, Take A Lover is a must have record. Not being familiar with their earlier works I would have to say it is definitely worth checking out everything these guys have to offer. Great songs, great production and overall a great group! Öken – Öken

Öken – Öken
Ozium Records – 2015
Rock, Stoner, Psych, Prog
Rated: *****

And here comes another fine release from that awesome little label in Sweden called Ozium Records. After spinning our heads with the amazing Mamont, Heroinne, Lugnoro and latest addition Haddock they now give us Öken. A bunch of Swedes from Skövde, that little town, hidden between the two big Vättern and Vänern lakes of Sweden. Four young cats who put out a two track single via bandcamp last year and now release their debut self-titled full-sized album. Eight tracks of pure unadulterated psychedelic stoner... Or so it seems... After paying homage to John Garcia and Kyuss’s Supa Scoopa And Might Scoop on opening track Ol’ Mr Scrooge, they continue their seemingly effortless journey towards a highly Scandinavian version of that stonerrock we all love so dearly. Mixing more psychedelic seventies and jam riffs into their compositions they quickly turn the loving nod you gave them in the beginning into a severe head job. Quick enough yer going, holy crap, this is so freakin good! And then on track three Ferrule they slow down and turn the soulful blues up and shred guitars like a demon. After which you slide into Väkteren, which freaks you out and makes you wonder if there’s anything these cats can’t do? Four more tracks remain, each one with their very own color and signature, some jazzy, some with more experimentation and some sounding almost South-American, yet also very much Öken. And when such a new band bursts unto the scene doing so much magic, there is only one conclusion to make. The Devil visited Skövde and got himself four new souls!

Phase Order – Demo

Phase Order – Demo
Self released – 2015
Metal, Hardcore, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ***

Next up we've got a demo by Phase Order. These fellas out of Chicago, IL have their bandcamp site tagged with the stoner rock and rock moniker. "Yeah maybe". But if someone asked me I would have to say this demo reflects more of a stoner metal, with a definable hardcore edge. The first track called Offering is an instrumental and a nice eight minutes and forty seconds ride. Then Goat House kicks in. I felt like I was at the Fast Lanes circa 1988 in Asbury Park NJ watching a pit of guys beat the crap out of each other. This is a hardcore throwback for sure. I loved it! In my opinion this is where they shine with the drummer who also fronts the band having a vocal styling that of Killing Time N.Y.H.C. Even the length of the track at only a 1:40 stinks of filthy ass core. OK, onto the track Red Flux; maybe here is where the stoner rock tag fits. At almost eight minutes it's a nice jam laden with some cool Sabbath influences. All the players crush this one. But I especially liked the crusty guitar work. Nice demo, I am looking forward to what comes next. Oh, by the way, their bandcamp site says "we will play anywhere". Anyone out there in Chill have a big backyard?

Ghost – Meliora

Ghost – Meliora
Spinefarm/Caroline – 2015
Rock, Pop, Metal, Theatrical, Occult
Rated: ***

And onwards we go, towards the perfect mixture of ABBA and Blue Oyster Cult with some extra clerical atmospheres and grandiose gestures. So, yes, we are talking about those rascals from Ghost. And every time again those rascals state beforehand that the album will sound less retro as the ones that came before and will turn more metal. But as we all know the clergy is not to be trusted, so on this one, Meliora they move once again further away from the heavy stuff and towards something definitely larger than life. And even though there is some screeching guitar here and there it is still as poppy as predecessor Infestissumam. But do we care? Should we care? These Swedish dresser uppers sound even more at home with their own brand of music. Somewhat retro, somewhat eighties hardrock and a lot of ABBA and Blues Oyster Cult. And on all those moments that they rock hard and sound good you are enjoying the hell out of yourself. But on those almost pompous, dramatic moments of overtures, you know this is what Ghost does best, turn the theatrical into something catchy and addictive.

Apathy Crutch – Herd The Cattle EP

Apathy Crutch – Herd The Cattle EP
Self released – 2015
Post punk, Metal, Rock, Stoner, Doom
Rated: ***

The Herd The Cattle EP by Apathy Crutch is a breath of fresh air. The outfit from Massachusetts would have fared well in the infancy post hardcore days of sub pop with their punkish, dare I say Cobain style vocals. At the same time I hear influences across the board from Sabbath, Nuclear Assault to Nirvana, and even DRI. (In my opinion). It seems that Apathy Crutch play what they want and that's how it should be and always be. I like a good doom record, but in the days where the drone sometimes becomes too drone for my liking, Apathy Crutch is a nice change of pace. I almost never discriminate; especially when it comes to music. I like almost every genre and I really enjoyed these guys. Is the production on Herd the Cattle perfect? No, but that's the beauty of it all. This a guitar driven band that seems to be an odd man out when it comes to stoner and those intermingled genres which is fine by me. You guys decide for yourselves at the band camp link below. I tried doing a little research on the band and didn't find much. Their bandcamp site also claims that the EP was recorded 10 years ago! Hopefully these guys are still rockin out. Yo, Apathy Crutch! Let us know via bandcamp what the deal is! Are you guys active? Is the 2005 date a typo? We need to know!

Windhand – Grief’s Infernal Flower

Windhand – Grief’s Infernal Flower
PIAS/Relapse – 2015
Rock, Doom, Metal, Stoner, Psych, Sludge
Rated: ****

All those years ago, back in 2013, their album Soma made it to the Number 3 position of the Stoner HiVe top 20 countdown, voted for by so many of you lovely freaks out there. Lead vocalist Dorthia Cottrell released a mighty fine solo record earlier this year, and now Windhand returns with Grief’s Infernal Flower. And once again we are mesmerized by that languid and husky voice that floats on top of those sluggish doom riffs. They’ve turned their doom syrup into something even more swampy and wooly. Offset against the more concise songs and less lengthy compositions, it turns the entire record into a highly psychedelic wall of repetition. Less oppressive and less deceitful than Soma, Grief’s Infernal Flower truly opens up for the listener. Especially on those cold full moon nights. And then, when the moonlight hits the right petal, you’ll be able to hear it… Sparrow… An acoustic offering that flutters and will have your heart take flight…

Carousel – 2113

Carousel – 2113
Suburban/Tee Pee – 2015
Rock, Hard, Classic, Metal
Rated: *****

We absolutely adored that motoring sound Jewelers Daughter brought us and spun that record until the needle ran right through the vinyl. And now, Carousel returns with the follow-up called 2113. Named after the number of the apartment where the guys lived together the sound reminds of that earlier album but has grown much richer and fuller. With added member Matt Goldborough (Pentagram/The Skull) the guitar violence explodes right out of the speaker like the rumblings of a Vincent Black Shadow exhaust pipe. But before we get carried away again with motorcycles analogies lets mention there’s also a more southern edge this time around and a rhythm sections that bounces and grooves like a motherfucker. And where that first album was marauding cavalry heading towards a party, this one has arrived, dismounted and are either sitting in the sun enjoying beer, strutting around checking out the girls or head banging to majestic guitars that not only pay homage to Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy, no they also molest cowbells and harmonicas. Shit. A party can’t get any better than this!

Against The Grain – Road Warriors

Against The Grain – Road Warriors
Self Destructo Records – 2015
Rock, Speed, Punk
Rated: ***

Detroit, that bad ass motorcity! Home to Against The Grain. Four freaky cats who have now delivered their fourth album Road Warriors. Going ever forward to evolve their version of punky speedrock into something that sounds classic and vintage. Rough edges turning smooth. No, don’t worry, they’ve not changed into something that isn’t wild at heart. But there is more of a seventies touch and a gigantic approach to everything. Where earlier albums were full force and punk, this one retains a very wholesome ability. It has something to do with that seventies thing we mentioned but also the implementation of something bluesy and something metal. Classic metal that is. And with that also comes the need to slow things down. We don’t bullet through every song anymore, no, we take it easy when the track deserves it. Giving more breathing space and making everything a righteous adventure. With hugely improved vocals and guitar work that’s furiously beautiful we can safely bet on Against The Grain getting bigger and better with every second that passes. And if you’d rather hear them gun it out like a true speedrock mudslinger; just put on the Run For Your Life track! One minute and forty-five seconds of speedrock bliss! Why aren’t these cats on Speedfest, the Dutch Speedrock Festival, this year?

Rate: ****

Creedsmen Arise have arrived from Sweden with their debut EP Temple, and the good stuff is doom-a-licious. Opening cut Temple will satisfy any fan of doom. But what I liked about it most is the vocalist. The guy is stand out and has some very tasty melodic phrasing on the record; especially in the opening tune. Creedsmen Arise lead you through their own brand of storytelling onto the second track Herbal Burial, and then Circle of Clergymen which has an awesome punk/hardcore style ending that was a nice change of pace and very enjoyable. It also showed that the rest of the band are no slouch! Fuzzy guitars, solid bass and drums as well round out Temple. Creedsmen Arise arrived and delivered. If your into doom, gloom and fuzz check ‘em out at their bandcamp below. You won’t regret i!

And to top things off, Mr. Bobby Liebling has never sounded better! Why yes, it’s Pentagram and we love it!
