Clagg – Gather Your Beasts
Self released – 2013
Rock, Metal, Doom, Sludge, Black
Rated: ***
Intensely black, dark and bleak. The new album Gather Your Beasts by Melbourne quintet Clagg is devoid of all color and preaches despair, anger and doom. But the rich variation of their blackness turns the five compositions on this fourth album into a radiating rainbow of massive brutishness. Low swinging sludge and a black metal doom groove set off on a procession towards the inevitable abyss. With bile boiling riffs and guttural vocals that liquefy the entrails; Clagg barrage our sensitive souls with obliterating heaviness. And thanks to some little guitar meandering that suddenly turns everything into a bright almost holy grey; the listener is able to survive the onslaught. Gripping, neck tight and strangling. Clagg.
