Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

What’s this then? A Quick Fire Friday round? We haven’t done one of those since somewhere around March when that Icelandic volcano first erupted. Since then we’ve had volcanic activity around the globe but no Quick Fire Friday… Even though… We know… It burns hot like molten lava! Ho ho ho! And we know, we know, the albums and bands deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! Let all that’s good and heavy burn you!

Panic Population – Panic Population

It’s a new project by Idlewar founding member Pete Pagonis, and we like Idlewar and we like Pete and we perhaps should have mentioned it sooner, cause the alt-rock vein exposed here demands our attention and our needle. So go shoot up and experience this psychedelic garage rocking panic!

The Dry Mouths – More Oo No Fluid

A new single by The Dry Mouths you say? Why yes please! Slater me up with that stuff and let it sit there for an incredibly long time, just listening to More Oo No Fluid on repeat. And hey, did you say there’s also a wicked video accompanying this track? There is. Go check that out here on this thing called Youtube. And as always, you can listen to the instrumental dreamy desert haze that it The Dry Mouths on bandcamp. Sweet!

Fliptop Box – Final Scene

Formed around 2003 somewhere in Athens, it’s Fliptop Box! (Say that twenty times fast!) And the new album of this grungy quartet is called Final Scene. Eight tracks that meander through the alternative rock and metal styles, with grooves a plenty and riffs galore! And hey, they’re from Greece… Did I ever tell you about the time I discovered the Mastiha drink for the first time?

Fairyport Convent – Fly United

We can’t keep track man! Fairyport Convent is a one man project and it has been releasing a steady stream of EP’s per month. Sometimes even two a month. Insanity is waiting just around the corner, together with the one-armed man and that guy with his tambourine, which isn’t the same guy, cause a one-armed man can’t light a cigarette and play the tambourine at the same time… Or can he?

Hope Hole – Death Can Change

“Once upon a time there was hope. Until we threw it all down that hole over there. Come closer. Lie down in the dirt. Hang your head over the edge of the abyss. Do you hear that? It calls. What sweet music they make. Hope Hole is Matt Snyder and Mike Mullholand. We take our inspiration from the uninspired, the enlightened who know there's no escape. No one here gets out...” There you have folks! Hook, line and sinker! They’ve got us, with their gothic psych and dark rock. Doom noir anyone?

Prehistoric Pigs – The Fourth Moon

And we end this Quick Fire Friday segment with a bona fide firecracker! Six track release The Fourth Moon by Italian trio Prehistoric Pigs. Out November 26th through Go Down Records the Italians are still intense and heavy zealots.  It’s got atavistic stoner, ancestral sludge and derelict doom for you to bathe in. And just like bathing in a certain moonlight will turn some of us feral, this one will turn everyone wild and crazy! Go check it out! Check'm all out!

Maragda – Maragda

Maragda – Maragda
Spinda Records/Nafra Records/Necio Records – 2021
Rock, Psych
Rated: *****

We were honored to deliver the International Premiere for the self-titled debut release of the Spanish trio Maragda. Are we therefor biased? Probably so. But as you crazies that follow the HiVe know, we are always biased, subjective and prejudiced. We love what we love and we dig what we dig because it does something to us. And we honestly and really just want to share that experience with you all. Or better yet, hope that you experience something along the lines of what we experienced when listening to a certain album. Cause that is what it is all about for us! Well, Maragda did a whole fucking lot with us! They managed to capture a lightning bolt and turn it into music. They created the whole Sistine Chapel down their in the darkness of the underworld from which they came; from which they burrowed, from where we heard the clang and clamor of revolt. For… “While there is life there is hope. I beg to assert... that as long as a man's heart beats, as long as a man's flesh quivers, I do not allow that a being gifted with thought and will, can allow himself to despair.” Indeed, it’s like the three from Barcelona managed to capture the essence of the Jules Verne book. Which is of course and adventure and a tale of discovery, but also of mankind and of our spirit and soul. And they do this with so much passion and belief, one cannot help but falling in love with Maragda. For they effortlessly combine kraut rock elements with garage, fuzz with prog and give it all this sanctified aura. Complex, wild, yet groovy and always returning some form of hook. Sparkling and direct, the riffs compound and build, testing limits of second track The Calling, while opener The Core As A Whole explodes, and then seems to pull back and float along all that burst from the explosion. What a welcome… Well, the rest of the album is just as elegant, intricate, interesting and complete… And just listen to Crystal Passage, damn, another Verne quote applies: “I dream with my eyes open.”

Blackwater Holylight – Silence/Motion

Blackwater Holylight – Silence/Motion
Riding Easy Records – 2021
Rock, Psych
Rated: ****

Bang! There they were, back in 2018, shooting to the Number 3 position of the April Doom Charts, we are of course referring to the all-female all-rocking, bewitching and psychedelic Blackwater Holylight! It was their debut release and it was damn good, or as we said back then: “Resounding riffs, enchanting vocals and a rhythmic approach that melt over in each other and galvanizes your moment in time. A wild, heavy, fuzzy, psychedelic record that will make you dream of witches and will make your dreams bewitched. Rootsy and folky at moments it also moves over to a more sludgy or noisy approach when needed. In fact, they manage to make their heaviness burn with something that sounds sacred and ancient. Dramatic and macabre! ” The Veils of Winter record followed in 2019 and did all that while slowly slithering through a bit more doom and tad more prog approach. And now they’re back for a third album and do what they did on their debut, but better! Better, calmer, serene and uniform. It’s called Silence/Motion, and gives you eight tracks or desolate psychedelic landscapes that will often freeze you with their distance and coldness. Filled with appetizing melodies that borrow as much from shoegaze and stoner as it does from blackened doom and metal. Especially on opener Delusional with Bryan Funck from Thou making the track a wonderful yet harsh duet. And even though those heavy influences are slowly exchanged for more folk and natural wave inspirations, the vistas created are never warm, never harmless and never safe. And those few instances of beauty, tenderness and protection feel like a rarefied glimpse through a butterfly’s wing…

Matt C. White - Creepshow Peepshow: Act II

Matt C. White - Creepshow Peepshow: Act II
Locust Records - October 2021
Stoner, Blues, Southern, Sludge
Rated: *****

Of Grandpa Jack and Dead Seconds fame, Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist Matt C. White has been laying down a bluesy, fuzzed-out circus of stoner and grunge in his solo series "Creepshow Peepshow", and the second installment "Act II" is just pure brilliance (again). Right out the gate, there is zero indication what you're hearing is a one-man operation. White's skill with each instrument, along with piercing vocals filled with personality, is impressive and then some. Opener "Mr. Bloody Bones" beckons you into the party with a drawn out intro of fatty low end fuzz and moans, before White unleashes primal screams that are just pure vocal catharsis. The sludge onslaught quickly turns to an impish bounce of growling riffs, and the ensuing chorus is an anthemic release. There are cheeky surprises aplenty, too, as White sneaks in some sliding southern acoustic and clever percussion that throw a little vaudeville fun into the mix. Follow-up and highlight track "Colt Killer" changes up the pace, busting out sinister bluesy licks that are straight ear candy. The tune settles into a mid-tempo creep with eerie keys and punchy drums, and a full throated chorus cinches the deal. In the song's latter half, yet more atmosphere is added with a delicate acoustic break, and then all bets are off as guitars and drums explode into stomping noise. Without spoiling the whole five track experience, it'd be plain irresponsible to not mention epic closer "Revenge". Gothic, southern acoustic guitar creates a melancholy foundation for hard-hitting, heartfelt vocals that will demand sing-alongs live. "Creepshow Peepshow: Act II" (and Act I, for that matter) shouldn't be referred to as just a "one-man band". White has created a work of bonkers creativity and crushing fuzz hooks that can't be missed.

Back from the Island…

Back from the Island…

We returned yesterday from a family visit on the British Island… Wish was amazing, even though we had to mess the best line-up of Desert Fest Antwerp ever and Dirty Sound Magnet that played a venue near my home town. But we returned just in time to wish our very own Reek Of STOOM a very happy birthday. But not in time to be able to post that Most Listened To Last Week post we just did, but normally do on Monday. Dominated ofcourse by Maragda and Redscale! Those two album we were so honored to be able to do an International Premiere for. Both albums are stunning and I hope all of your went over to the blog and pressed play and now know that we are not just going overboard with the accolades again but that they really and truly are amazing…

And because Madman Tony Maim suddenly fired up his Black Insect Laughter blog again, we immediately went and checked out the albums he posted about. Like that manic Kowloon Walled City about which he wrote: “Kowloon Walled City have carved out an impressive slab of hardcore/sludge/noise rock that is full of dirty, distorted tunes of disgust, regret and thoughtful anger. Feeling slightly less chaotic than past records, the band are not scared to strip away walls of noise to reveal passages of stark intensity which rely on vocals and picked guitar to set the scene before blasting out a barrage of atmospheric noise and aggression. Great production has melded the instruments into a massive force that sounds unstoppable - if there is any justice in this shitty world, this is a body of work that stands out in an overcrowded genre and which other bands will be measured against.” So go check it out! And check Black Insect Laughter blog out, cause the Madman has scribbled down some other mad ravings about other albums as well!

Suns Of The Tundra – Murmuration

Suns Of The Tundra – Murmuration
No Profit Recordings / Bad Elephant Music – 2021 / 2019
Rock, Prog, Psych, Post
Rated: *****

Should we mention the history of this band? The beginnings under the name Peach? The bassist that used to be a part of that line-up and then joined Tool? The fact that three of the four are also part of The Osiris Club and it’s amazing The Green Chapel + Live At Roadburn release earlier this year? Or should we just start going overboard again with the accolades for their 2019 album Mumuration? Well, we are referring to the English foursome Suns Of The Tundra and the vinyl re-release of said album. An album so fine it will surely tune you in and turn you on once again. And it doesn’t matter if you have been listening to this album since November 2019 or if you are now coming to grips with it, it is one crazy good record. Seven tracks and forty-two minutes long, it will bring you all your need from progressive rock. It touches on postrock here and there, gives a few metallic spur kicks and meanders through the psychedelic landscape like the very best of the prog rock greats. Going into record with opening title-track; the whole composition, the rhythms, that bass, the vocals, all serve as the perfect and irresistible lure to pull you deeper into the album. After that the push and pull of every track will either propel you forward or drive you inwards. Often grandiose, the sound and concept remains highly accessible, but complex and carefully constructed. Suns Of The Tundra’s Murmuration is hyper melodic, inventive and extremely gifted, and when the Survive Just Fine track twists, turns, swoops and swirls across your mind; you will surely see the pure beauty in its shape-shifting sound…

Karmic Seeds – Karmic Seeds

Karmic Seeds – Karmic Seeds
Self released – 2021
Rock, Stoner, Garage, Psych
Rated: ****

We’re late to the Karmic Seeds party. Very late. Much too late. And its even more wry than at other times. Cause the Karmic Seeds three delivered their self-titled debut back in May 2021, at a time when their vocalist and guitarist sadly passed away. It’s starts off with Histamine, a psychedelic stoner and garage rocker that shows its color fairly fast and will undoubtedly give you an idea of what is to come. But even if you already hear some of stuff these cats are capable off and a blue sounding guitar that will let you drift away on the sounds before being propelled forward by the heavy undercurrent. It is second track Arabic Spring that will let you know that anything is possible. The eastern influences incorporated into this little psychedelic ditty will warm your bons and make you float along its languid groove and desert vibe. Three fast paced garage and stoner rockers follow that all retain a bit of that blue psych touch and grungy flair. And when you almost are settled into that sound, they open it up on that final stretch of fifth track Intrusion Delusion before they hit you with their sixth track The Black Witch Of Mount Sinjar. Incorporating doom into the mix, with excellent vocals, these three seem to have been capable of a lot if not everything. We are too late. But we will always have this fine album to keep enjoying. In honor of the man who passed away, but more importantly because the seven tracks featured are damn freaking good! Thank you Jorit and Pieter and may Tim be rocking hard wherever that may be…

Carcaño – By The Order Of The Green Goddess

Carcaño – By The Order Of The Green Goddess
Clostridium Records – 2021
Rock, Metal, Stoner, Sludge, Psych, Doom, Grunge
Rated: ****

The Italian quartet Carcaño released their self-titled debut back in 2018 which was hailed as an awesome grungy stoner metal album with overtones of sludge and sweet psychedelic touches. And this year, already a few months back, they followed that up with By Order Of The Green Goddess. Why it did not immediately turn heads and blow minds we will never know. But it is doing so now for sure. By thanks of the Carcaño four themselves, who tugged at our sleeves and because DenpaFuzz’s and fellow Doom Charts Contributor Roberto Lucas whooped up his love like whip cream on the September Peroration of said Doom Charts. Lysergic, lethargic and languid doom meets stoner, grunge and sludge, have a drink or two to get to know each other and then go out to have one of the wildest nights they might never remember By Order Of The Green Goddess. Savory, almost neo-occult atmospheres that will surely make you want to guzzle the absinth and dip your fingers in every drug that might pass before your eyes. At least, that’s how the ambience is painted and that’s how those inner urgers are stirred. Hallucinatory, mesmerizing and fascinating, like that subtle poison that ravages and eats men’s heart and brain. It will offer sanctuary and it will make you want to join a cult. An eight day trip, by virtue of eight tracks, that will surely alter your consciousness and fill you with a tide of happiness and expectation on a wave of delicious music, By Order Of The Green Goddess

Cavern Deep – Cavern Deep

Cavern Deep – Cavern Deep

Holy crap! The three guys from Cavern Deep made a full album video. Indeed, a video to accompany 42 minutes of excellent heavy rock that is their self-titled album. All eight tracks, one movie. Excellent work crazies!

The album syposis is as follows:

"The start of the expedition. One archaeologist and 49 men stand at the gates of a previously unknown civilization, for a moment staring down into the bowels of the mountain before they begin their decent. The journey downwards turn out to be more dangerous than expected, they climb down through whirling stairs lit only by organic fluorescent lights.. Further down the path turns more and more crumbled, eventually they must use ropes to traverse the broken bridges and tunnels over the deep chasms below. Filled by the promise of treasure they continue downwards. Many men go missing as they’re tasked to explore diverting tunnels, they never return and their screams are followed by silence. the only thing found is their safety ropes, driven by greed the archaeologist continues the expedition."
