Morning… FB / Meta has been out of control recently. The Doom Charts has had issues, even though we changed nothing in our operation. And for those following Stoner HiVe, well, you know there’s been loads of annoying stuff happening there as well. And now the news came that the always good, always decent, nothing but good Mel Lie from Sunday’s Heavy Tunes has been completely banned from FB  for no reason whatsoever. You would hope that someone starts a new social platform soon. Incorporation that which was good from FB and keep it completely clean of the nonsense, algorithms and bots FB has been using lately. Wishful thinking? Well… It’s another week and we’re gonna try and post this thing. Shall we try with or without links? Let’s see what happens and fingers crossed it works as it has always done in the past… Cause with new members Jon McGough and Ronny Dijksterhuis we have more capabilities to spread the word on all that good and heavy stuff out there! And it is deserved for them and the bands they write about. Quine for instance or Yajaira! We mentioned clips by Luna Sol and Occult Witches and managed to post that Stoner Hype thing where we blurb about the Numbers 40 to 26 of the last Doom Charts. And let’s not forget, we were honored to premiere that full album by Kahfa, out now on Argonauta Records! Go check it out! Check’m  all out!

Quine – Quine E.P.

Quine – Quine E.P.
Self-released – 2024
Rock, Prog, Alternative, Electronica
Rated: **

Imagine a world where guitars no longer speak or weep. Quine from Belarus (not the French one) embodies this as the band forgoes the use of guitars instead focusing on bass and more nontraditional avenues such as low detuned synthesizers and other electronica. This produces a rather futuristic overall feel and one where the bass seems to take center stage. Especially on the track ‘Syn’ where the funky bass line opens the Quine E.P. before being joined by the vocals that have a James Maynard Keenan likeness to them. “Wite’ opens with synths and has a feeling of disconcert but also of optimism and expectation within the lyrics of a better world. It’s a bass heavy track that is full of A Perfect Circle worship, as well as a few great lead keyboard parts.  The more laid-back track ‘Thes’ continues the spiral down the matrix without a glitch, the bass playing is spot on and the narrative vocals serving the main role of the song. A unique experiment that works quite well, Quine is on to something here, their quest is imminent.

Deville – 20 Years

Deville – 20 Years
Sixteentimes Music – 2024
Rock, Hardrock, Stoner, Metal
Rated: ****

What’s that you say? You are not really that familiar with the amazing Deville? Where have you been the past twenty years? That’s right! Swedish quartet Deville has been around for twenty years! And to celebrate that fact they’ve selected eight tracks from their seven albums to introduce themselves all over again to those few who have not been rocking out to their majestic music. Add to this a wild new single Dust and a cover version of Nine Inch Nails’s The Hand That Feeds and you know you are in for a freaking good time! Shying away from their first two releases you get treated to the awesome Lava from their 2013 Hydra record. Their second 2013 record Come Heavy Sleep is represented by Rise Above and Deserter. Two years later they released Make It Belong To Us and from that album we get to hear What Remains. In 2018 they released Pigs With Gods, the title track, God Sealed Tomb and Wrecked are featured. And that amazing album from 2022 called Heavy Lies The Crown gets attention by the rocking Serpent Days. As usual with a compilation, best of and a glance back through a bands discography, fans will be missing their favorites perhaps and some albums should have been featured more according to your taste. But perhaps, when any of those feelings arise, it means, this album wasn’t made for you. You know Deville. You love Deville. Just like me. And yes, I need to have it because of Dust and the righteous rendition of The Hand That Feeds, and so do you. But this tasty Deville taster is actually here to make the other cats, the ones that did not know. Twenty years is a long time to go without Deville and I hope those cats and the ones that did know have Deville for another twenty years at least. And judging from that extremely fuzzy and entirely scorching new single Dust, we should! And for everybody getting their first taste of Deville, get ready for a ten track ride of your lifetime! 20 Years worth of rock condensed into one hell of a ride!

Yajaira - Epopeya

Yajaira - Epopeya
Self-released - 2024
Stoner, Doom, Psychedelic
Rated: ****

At the very end of last century I heard a song on the internet that sounded like the explosive result of a full speed, head-on collision between Dozer and Thumlock (two bands I discovered just a tad earlier). That song was Alcohol by Chilean band Yajaira - one of the heaviest stoner rock songs I had ever heard. Later on I found out their entire 1998 self-titled debut album was a brutal assault to the ears, filled to the brim with bottom-heavy stoner rock and a bit of fired-up doom thrown in for good measure. To this day I still go back to that album on a more or less regular basis, especially when I need to get my aggression out.

Since that debut they've released another four albums between 2000 and 2017, on which they were expanding their sound, shifting more towards doom and adding psychedelic elements to various degrees and with mixed success. Now, seven years after 'Post Tenebras Lux', they are back with a new album titled 'Epopeya', a Spanish word that can be translated as odyssey or epic (also epic poetry, long story, long film etcetera).

With original drummer Sebastián Arce back on board, the festivities begin with the title track that fittingly clocks in at way over nine minutes. A daring start, because not every band is able to keep you on the edge of your seat when going all out like this. But after the first bout of feedback, followed by a mesmerising doom groove, you know you're in for a treat. It's one hell of a song, shifting between doom, stoner and psychedelic passages, topped of by a mind-blowing guitar solo near the end that intertwines with meandering wah wah bass lines. It's a statement to show Yajaira is back and have found the perfect balance between all the influences they've dabbled in over the years.

And although it seems nearly impossible, the rest of the album maintains a similar high standard with perfect flow and placing of the songs, as well as the usage of some spoken samples that provide an extra layer to the overall experience. Whether it's the groove-driven 'Rayo Psíquico', the time travelling blues of 'Algo Se Está Quemando', the stoner punk shenanigans in 'Las Pestes', the doom ballad 'Vuelta Al Sol' or the hazy, slowly accelerating instrumental closer 'Odisea', it all works like a charm because of the songwriting skills and impeccable execution - with a special nod to the better than ever vocal delivery. Add to that a crisp production without losing any of the grit Yajaira is known for, and you've got one of the best stoner/doom releases so far this year. So, fasten your seatbelts and get ready for an epic trip you won't forget. Epopeya!

A new member to the team: Ronny Dijksterhuis!

A new member to the team: Ronny Dijksterhuis!

We're lucky we found the amazing Yajaira and that we kept raving about it here and there. Cause that might have been the ticket to get Ronny Dijksterhuis on the Stoner HiVe team. Cause through the Doom Charts and that band, the man found us. And even though we might actually have known eachother somewhat in person for ages, we never really knew. He used to write for Dutch music magazine Up Magazine, which unfortunately folded back in 2014. And since finding out about Doom Charts and Stoner HiVe, his longing to write some new stuff about the music he loves has been growing exponentially. And guess what, he's already wrote his first review... And I'm sure you can guess about which album that is...

We welcome the honorable Ronny Dijksterhuis to the team and can’t wait to read his first words of wisdom about the new Yajaira album... Welcome Ronny

Luna Sol - Evil (Is On The Rise)

Luna Sol - Evil (Is On The Rise)

The few crazy ones that have been following Stoner HiVe a bit, know how much we adore everything maestro Dave Angstrom does. We can't help it, it's almost like a bro-crush or something! So, when we finally heard there was new music on the horizon we jumped out of our pants with excitement! That's right! A new Luna Sol album is around the corner! Vita Mors is the title of the new album and will come at you, teeth barred, September 20th on Ripple Music. Can hardly wait! Luckily, we have second single Evil (Is On The Rise) to quench our thirst.

PR Wire:

High mountain stoner rock trio Luna Sol (fronted by Hermano guitarist David Angstrom) present the second track taken from their upcoming new album "Vita Mors", to be issued on September 20th via Ripple Music.

New single "Evil (Is On The Rise)" delves into themes of unease, darkness and despair, as well as a longing for liberation and renewal from the negativity that can overwhelm us. Drawing inspiration from the blues, frontman and guitarist David Angstrom skillfully tells this folklore with a sense of slyness, accompanied by a heavy beat that captivates listeners. The music video showcases the band's admiration and appreciation for Mexican culture and its celebration of life.

Luna Sol is a highly regarded high mountain stoner blues rock band led by veteran singer and lead guitarist David Angstrom, known for his work in bands such as Hermano, Asylum On The Hill, Black Cat Bone and Supafuzz. Now in its 14th year, the band is poised to deliver its finest album yet through Californian imprint Ripple Music.

To bring this vision to life, Angstrom enlisted the help of drummer Zeth Pedulla and bassist Doug Tackett. The trio's chemistry was immediate and undeniable. As the riffs began to flow, songs came to life and they decided to hit record to capture the beautiful heaviness they were creating together. From the onset, they all wanted "
Vita Mors" to feel and sound live, pulling the listener into a small dive bar nestled in the mountains and filled with Marshall stacks, Les Pauls, a massive amount of drums and a wall of bass amps to shake the foundation.

"
Vita Mors" highlights Angstrom's desire to evolve and explore new musical territory while staying true to his Southern Kentucky roots. Doug and Zeth create beautiful layers of fury in one breath while offering a divine delicacy in the next, a perfect foundation for Angstrom’s madness, stories, riffs and noise.

Sorrows Pyre was released July 12th through Black Throne Productions and is the wild new album by Occult Witches! And the new video for single The Fool catches the band in all its seventies rocking glory! Highly infectious and a righteous firestarter!

From the PR wire:

"The video portrays a young woman experiencing a profound personal crisis, venturing towards the abyss, while three individuals, depicted as demons, emerge to pursue her," the band elaborates. "We’d like to give a big thanks to Marius Mongeau for filming a second music video with us, was a blast!"

OCCULT WITCHES has quickly risen through the ranks, defining a unique space within the rock genre with their captivating blend of music and storytelling. FULL ALBUM PREMIERE

Kahfa - Le Poison et La Reine

It’s time! You’ve had your coffee, you’ve got your running shoes on and you are ready for action! So, here it comes. The FULL ALBUM PREMIERE for Le Poison et La Reine the new album by Swiss duo Kahfa. It releases on Friday the 26th through Argonauta Records, but you can here it here now. We wrote a few words about it last Sunday, you can read them HERE, but what all you heavy rock enthusiasts really need to do, is press play! Kahfa Kamikaze! Let’s attack! Let’s go!

The album in their own words:

"This album is the result of a year and a half in the rehearsal room, of our need to express what is the continuation of the project born almost 4 years ago, and which led us to record a first EP which has a completely different sound from the new job. It is the realization of our continuous search for a sound, a musical genre, the strength of a strong passion. For us this first full-length is a motivation to move forward and compose music that changes according to our personal change and our vision of the world which is constantly developing. Our aim is to convey to the listener that vital force that characterizes our concerts and our approach to life. For you, people who will listen, this work that has no stopping point at all...." ~ Kahfa

PR Wire:

In the heart of the picturesque landscapes of the Swiss Jura, an atypical musical duo is born, bringing a breath of fresh air into the music scene. Kahfa was born in Delémont in the summer of 2020, with a clear vision: to explore new musical dimensions. In autumn 2021, they begin making their presence felt with the release of their first EP, "Sauvage". Their melodies, both haunting and authentic, reflect the raw reality of everyday life and the sincere emotions that accomp any it. With an incendiary groove and fuzz tones, their heavy, captivating music resonates against a backdrop of French lyrics, transporting the audience into a frenzied state. Like a bolt of lightning, their music strikes with raw intensity and electrifying energy. Inspired by icons ranging from Black Sabbath to Noir Désir, Kahfa transcends genres, creating a sound that breaks codes and defies convention. In 2023, Kahfa is pleased to join the Argonauta Records family, the Italian label that shares their pa ssion for heavy music. This new step marks the constant evolution of their musical journey

The June 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26

The June 2024 Doom Charts – 40 to 26

Stoner Hype

It took a bit longer than usual, but here we are again, collecting what we did on our little Facebook page right after the new regular edition of the Doom Charts goes online. We count down from 40 to 26 and try to type in a few words about that album or ep that makes sense to us. It’s not a review; but usually a miniscule blurb, a little sentence to entice, to hype. A Stoner Hype… Well, we collected them here to post for you in one nice little post on the blog… Because we like to keep things nice and tidy and it helps us spread the good word about them on Instagram as well…

OH HIROSHIMA – ALL THINGS SHINING

"All Things Shining by Oh Hiroshima, delivers glorious post rock, shoegazing moments and progressiveness. And turns your adventure through their landscape into a labyrinthian experience. And every time you wander pack into their wonderous terrain, things will be different...."

THE GHOST NEXT DOOR – CLASSIC SONGS OF DEATH AND DISMEMBERMENT

"Out on Ripple Music, the new The Ghost Next Door gives you Tool-like progressiveness, with overtones of nineties grunge and eighties metal. There is more grit and harshness though and this is exactly what sets Classic Songs Of Death and Dismemberment apart from all other progressive metal albums. Tasty!"

YOUNG ACID – MURDER AT MAPLE MOUNTAIN

"Out on Majestic Mountain Records, the glorious debut album Murder At Maple Mountain, by Young Acid! A veritable supergroup that is not more than the sum of its parts! It's an entirely different machine and its one of those albums that will slowly but surely seep into the very core of your being..."

BLACK ON HIGH – ECHOES THROUGH TIME

"Black On High's Echoes Through Time delivers doom tuned, down low and grunge toned stoner rock. Seven tracks that resound that early nineties vibe, while giving it a very own edge. It's delicious!"

WYTCH PYCKNYCK – WYTCH PYCKNYCK

"Wytch Pycknyck!!! Noisy, metal, garage and punk inspired ruckus, it's that skate vibe and that thrashy stoner touch that will surely make you fall in love with this four-piece from the UK... I know I am... And it's a freakin debut album! And and and... That last track... Frostbite... Now there's a change and a change within, starting with UK (the) street(s) rap, moving towards psych and space and punk, metal and then doom tones to set you off on whatever rampage you feel like... Wowzah!"

WHITE CANYON & THE 5TH DIMENSION – THE GOLDEN KEY TO THE KINGDOM OF NO RETURN

"Returning from our holiday in Spain we asked what album we should listen first. From multiple direction we were advised to immediately check out the new White Canyon & The 5th Dimension album The Golden Key To The Kingdom Of No Return . Which meant, we immediately did! The psych is wild here! Tribalistic, spacious and often trance inducing! "

DESERT TWELVE – THE LAST DARK WOOD

"The new The Last Dark Wood album by Desert Twelve definitely has its moments and a lot of inspiration coursing through its veins. It unfortunately also to seems to waver a bit in production and in delivery, but it's nonetheless a worthy successor to their debut from 2022! "

SUMAC – THE HEALER

"SUMAC's The Healer feels like an experimental simulacrum of sounds and shifts, which will leave some listeners bewildered and others in blissful ecstacy. An one hour and fiftee minute long trip... "

EL JEFAZO – COLISIÓN BRUTAL

"El Jefazo! Brutal and so delicious! stoner metal, doom, sludge and a hefty dose of pure head on colissions! Colisión Brutal, is the perfect name for this amazing release! "

AMON ACID – SUBMERGING

"We've been digging Amon Acid since we ever came across them... But the new Submerging is something else! And I guess Desert Psychlist's Frazer Jones hit the spot with this words: "Excellent grooves of spacious and heavy doom tinted with elements of Bauhaus like goth." Loving it! "

PIJN – FROM LOW BEAMS OF HOPE

"I assumed Pijn hailed from the Netherlands, but they're from Manchester, UK and their post-metal on FROM LOW BEAMS OF HOPE is riddled with audio samples and a truly breathing entity that envelops and embraces as you descend with them into an emotional torrent... "

BLACK SPELL – INTO DARKNESS

"𝕭𝖑𝖆𝖈𝖐 𝕾𝖕𝖊𝖑𝖑 Band 's Into Darkness indeed sees the darkness doubling, and with it you descent into the murky depths of the scuzzy, lo-fi, acid doom. Proto by default, this preaches that ancient lust for blood... "

YAJAIRA – EPOPEYA

"Yajaira rock is one of those bands that will make you want to move to Chile! EPOPEYA is a huge album, delivering epic scaled stoner metal and monumental doom! Once played, it will be played some more... And more... "

NEBULA / BLACK RAINBOWS – IN SEARCH OF THE COSMIC TALE: CROSSING THE GALACTIC PORTAL

"It's not been easy listening to the Nebula / BLACK RAINBOWS split In Search Of The Cosmic Tale: Crossing The Galactic Portal knowing what happened to the lovely bassist Ranch Sironi. The three songs being studio debut with the band its hard to listen to. Wild songs, wild energy and a Nebula that seemed destined to surf the galactic waves once again... This HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS split has 6 mythical songs that will surely become even more legendary over time... "

ATOMIC VULTURE – PILGRIMS OF THE SUN

"Atomic Vulture has been an absolute favorite band over here, their instrumental albums always an amazing go to for stonerized psych and space rock. The new Pilgrims Of The Sun is no different, a bit darker, a bit more energy and a wild current running through the tracks... 41 minutes of pure instrumental bliss!"

Tune in next month when we do this Stoner Hype again for the number 40 to 26 of the July Doom Charts... Live during the weekend on our little Facebook Page or afterwards when we collect them here... But for now... Go listen to all of the 40 of June if you haven't already!
