Rest In Peace – Mark Lanegan

Rest In Peace – Mark Lanegan

Today, tonight and tomorrow we play nothing but Mark Lanegan. Had been revisiting the Blues Funeral album the past days because it turned ten. Will have to revisit everything now… Had the honor of seeing him perform with Queens Of The Stone Age multiple times and many of his live shows… Had the honor to ask him some silly questions a few times… And was honored to talk art with him… Even more honored that he gave the advice to read the Robert Lowell book Imitations… Will cherish that forever…

Let’s have some Whiskey… And some holy ghost... Here's to you Mr. Lanegan…

Frozen Planet …. 1969 – Not From 1969

Frozen Planet …. 1969 – Not From 1969
Pepper Shaker Records / Headspin Records – 2022
Rock, Psych, Instrumental
Rated: ****

The instrumental improvisation three from Sydney, Australia called Frozen Planet … 1969 strike again! Indeed, that weird band with those weird dots in their name. They claim they’re Not From 1969 with the title of the new record; but they sure as hell sound like the acid boom that was that magical year. Cause you know, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant. But in the case of Frozen Planet … 1969, they come mighty close! It is their tenth album, and we know what we might expect; yet the outcome is always surprising and adventurous. Cause that is the entire nature of their recorded improvisation, they aim to lay claim to those magical moments, when inspiration smoothly transitions into psychedelic rock composition which is able to lift the spirit, enchant the heart and capture the mind. The three tracks on this forty-five-minute-long release have no trouble doing just that; without big gestures or grandiose vistas, all forty-five minutes seem to trickle into your brain, turn you on and set you free. Free to float along, free to let your awareness wander and free to dance like the free-spirited maniac you might be. More wild jams indeed!

Titanosaur – Absence of Universe

Titanosaur – Absence of Universe
Swamp Records – 2022
Metal, Punk, Sludge, Doom, Stoner, Space
Rated: ****

Absence of Universe is the new album by the one-man band from Hudson, New York called Titanosaur. There are indeed a few spacey elements on the album and one or two moments of respite; just listen to middle track Miles To Go, which serves as a definite breather between all that massive and relentless chugging. But everything else just pounds and bangs and hits and grinds! Indeed, Geoff Saavedra known his fast-paced stoner metal, knows how to punk up his sludge and knows how to hit a homerun when it comes to fire and fury. For that you need to listen to the first four and final four tracks; they all stomp on the terra like a titanic dinosaur. Which might be logical when the project name is Titanosaur; but for a one-man project to excel at delivering both riffs and drums in this fashion, you need to be one hell of a legend. Personal favorite might be the chugging yet also dynamic: Shut Off The Voices. But we can name about eight other tracks we dig the shit out of!

Blues Weiser – Impact of Aviation

Blues Weiser – Impact of Aviation

Impact of Aviation is lead single and awesome video for the new album Obey The Booze by Spanish psychedelic stoner rockers Blues Weiser. Out on Argonauta Records somewhere in April and this single sets the bar high; or at least says something about a bar… "Booze for Blues! No time to think, time to drink!“ The trio states, and says even more with this single. This is all we love from everything stoner, desert and fuzz! Can’t wait to hear the full thing!

Narbo Dacal – Narbo Dacal

Narbo Dacal – Narbo Dacal
Self released / Piranha Music – 2022
Metal, Doom, Prog, Sludge
Rated: ****

There’s definitely a touch of black here, a frosty finger of evil. Offset or better yet, complemented by some natural folk elements and a female voice that can bewitch your soul, enchant your heart and freeze your balls off. We’re talking about the four-track self-titled release Narbo Dacal from the three that hail from wonderful Krakow. Out through Piranha Music, the four tracks do all this on a foundation of progressive metal and sludge thundering. There’s considerable ambition at play here, with the sprawling third track DCCXXXVII, scored by passages of massive guitarwork and savage drums, the vocals once again see-saws brilliantly between tender and shattering. There is a new star in the firmament of all those that seek to bring us folk-inflected prog-infused sludge and doom metal. And this star shines brightly dark and shimmering cold and is named Narbo Dacal. And that’s only the start of it…

Stew – Taste

Stew – Taste
Uprising Records – 2021
Rock, Hardrock, Seventies, Stoner, Blues, Psych
Rated: ****

Been digging this album for a few months now, cause it came out late November 2021. Had actually been waiting for it to appear on bandcamp; but it never materialized. I do wonder why the Swedish three from Lindberg called Stew do not take advantage of the amount of heavy rock loving fiends that find stuff through bandcamp? But I guess there’s more Stew for me in that case? But there should be enough Stew for everyone! The vintage sound, that retro blues on the new nine track album called Taste will surely be absolutely savory for everyone that grabs a spoonful. The perfect balance between guitars and drums; those damn amazing vocals from bassist Markus Asland, Taste offers it all up in delicious scoopings. Authentic and genuine hardrocking blues that meanders over to the psychedelic avenue when it wants; but always stays grounded and groovy. C’mon guys, there’s enough Stew for everyone! And everyone should get a Taste!

Drunken Crocodiles – The Monk

Drunken Crocodiles – The Monk

They have a mean bite; but see everything double… We’re talking about Drunken Crocodiles! Not really though, cause it’s the name of a stoner metal outfit from Parma, Italy. Back in 2019 they released their debut album Out Of Barrel through Too Loud Records and have now found it fit to release a lyric video for The Monk. It is also meant to bring closure to the old line-up of three, say goodbye to his earlier compadres and for founder Elia Borelli to welcome two new members to the Drunken Crocodiles team. But, the song stands tall in the face of all opposition! Just like The Monk…

Kurokuma - Born of Obsidian

Kurokuma - Born of Obsidian
Self-released - February 2022
Sludge, progressive, doom, psych
Rated: *****

Since their 2014 debut, Sheffield's Kurokuma have been steadily building towards their first full length, and the wait was well worth it. "Born of Obsidian" is a fervently creative slab of sludge, drawing from Mesoamerican myth, diverse percussion, and a penchant for absolutely leveling listeners' ears. Enveloping the ten ton riffs being thrown around, a major highlight is the atmosphere. "Born of Obsidian" feels primal and unknowable, like it was dredged up from some long forgotten pit. Bloodcurdling screams echo the sentiment as they burst forth from the initial lumber of opener "Smoking Mirror", just as powerful as the accompanying grinding wall of guitar and hefty low-end. "Sacrifice to Huitzilopochtli" follows up with more of the same filthy tone, and adds in darkly angular riffs and dissonance to complete the descent into madness. The guttural vocals are relentless, and the mass of sound threatens to overwhelm as Kurokuma break into a mad dash to the finish with an avalanche of thrashy riffage. The best is yet to come, however, and highlight track and midpoint "Jaguar" simply blows away the already high bar set so far. A minimal, almost techno, percussive beat opens the eight and a half minute epic, patiently winding its way between bright eastern guitar licks. The buildup is masterful, and pays off in a monstrous onslaught of bottomless low-end and unearthly distortion, complete with shrieks easily mistaken for a big cat of the jungle. Pulsing screeches of guitar seethe between the bursts of noise, and the percussive backbone never ceases its insistent push. Penultimate cut "Ololiuqui" brings in more unique instrumentation, with something akin to a rainmaker shaking the song gradually towards another wall of sound, behind which are chunky, churning riffs and very welcome Beastwars vibes. The album closes with another eight-plus minute epic in "Under The Fifth Sun". What sound like hand drums patter their way into a swirling wash of distortion, soon layered with more traditional drum kit hammering. In fittingly brutal style, It all culminates in a doomy, mind-bending freakout of Conan-level crush and spacey synths. With "Born of Obsidian", Kurokuma have smashed through the old ceiling of what sludge can be, bringing a progressive and culturally expansive take on the standard bludgeon to create a sure contender for heaviest release of the year.

Stone House On Fire – Waterfall

Stone House On Fire – Waterfall

Out on Electric Valley Records is the new album Time Is A Razor by Brazilian quartet Stone House On Fire. It stood tall on the January 2022 Doom Charts at position Number 15 and with the new single Waterfall and its lysergic video; we would assume it will reach higher up come February. Cause they channel that heady sixties and sweaty seventies vibe, making it alle extra fuzzy, bluesy and absolutely on fire!

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday

It’s Friday… Well, it’s still Friday somewhere right?! Bandcamp Friday perhaps? Or at least Stoner HiVe’s Quick Fire Friday, right?! Yes sir! Or madam! But today we’re doing things slightly different. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday has always been a collection of the weird, the strange, the different and the older stuff. Well, today, we’re going to namedrop a lot of other stuff as well… Our love some of those magical people out there that do that label thing! Most of it was sent to us somewhere in 2021, and we can only get to it now…  And we know, we know, the albums, bands, artists and labels deserve more than the few words we will jot down here. More attention and more of our time! But there is so much out there and we just simply cannot ever do it all justice. So here it is. The Stoner HiVe Quick Fire Friday! And it burns hot like molten lava!

Electric Relics Audio Artifacts

We’re starting with Electric Relics Audio Artifacts. Tanner Olson from Across Tundras very own label. And most of everything he offers on his bandcamp page is, Name Your Price! There are over 80 releases on his bandcamp page. And for a Friday, there is so much to listen to and so much to choose from! So, you’d best get yer furry little ass over to Electric Relics Audio Artifacts and get crackin!

Detieti — Serious IV

Progressive funk, krautish punk and total experimental freedom! That’s what Moscow five-piece Detieti is all about. And they get incredibly serious about it on their newest release Serious IV. Already out there since December 2021, released through that freaky Addicted Label, it’s over thirty five minutes of freaky prog abandon and bizarre outbursts for a sci-fi soundtrack that all each of the five members envision going into totally different directions… Serious about wild music? Get some Serious IV!

Addicted Label

Addicted Label

But WAIT! We just mentioned that awesome Detieti release Serious IV from the Addicted Label; but Addicted has been bringing out some much wild, wonderful and weird stuff; turning us into a definite label junkie! And in that messed up year of 2021 we’ve not gotten around to mentioning so much of that drug that got us hooked… Well; to sort of get clean… Here’s a rundown of a few!

Thy Grave – Filth

Thy Grave gives us ‘death-doom catharsis’ by way of sludge, metal and so much filthy noise… Thy Grave was spawned in 2012 as a project of several people scattered across the vast expanse of Russia. Initially, the band got inspiration from such monsters as Loinen and Khanate and didn’t use guitars in their records at all, just bass and a shitload of distortion. And that's where Addicted Label came in... And it evolved into much much much more... Just dig into that Filth...

Megalith Levitation — Void Psalms

Megalith Levitation materialized from the eternal void and acid vapors of Chelyabinsk, Russia in April 2016 to bare their psalms into this world. And Madman Tony Maim loved their earlier Acid Doom Rites release! Can you already hear that perfect Addicted Label  fit? On Void Psalms they give us all they have and whip us into a frenzy with their psychedelic doom, acid metal, sludge and so much unhallowed rumbling low-end!

Crust — Stoic

Stoicism turned crust and Crust gives us Stoic. Black, death, sludge, metal, doom turned into maelstrom of noise, core and hell depth gutter! Typical Addicted Label insanity! It will fill you entire being, all of your thoughts, all of your emotions, all of your actions and all of your extremities with their form of extreme metal meditiation.

Stonebourne – Squirrels On A Plane

We move away from Addicted to bring you something old and something new… And something else to get Addicted to... No label for these cats. Yet? They sent it to us at the end of the summer of 2021; but they had already released it a year earlier! Indeed, it’s 2022 and we are mentioning the Squirrels On A Plane record by German quartet Stonebourne. Grunge with hardrock, alternative and stoner influences and a whole lot of ear pleasing melodies. So, 2022, 2021, 2020 or the nineties, whatever year you hear… It’s good and tasty rock!

Kentucky Green – Galactic Acid

And we finish this Quick Fire Friday sesson with an absolute banger! They came in at the 100th spot (in points) of the Stoner HiVe Top 20 Countdown of 2021 and we never got around to mentioning them even though we had been grooving to their stoner doom blues ever since it got to us somewhere around the summer of 2021. The Brisbane three called Kentucky Green delivered nine damn fine tracks on an album called Galactic Acid. With some sweet and sexy soulful attitude straight out of the seventies this is the galactic kool-aid everyone should be guzzling!

Cormano – Weird Tales

Cormano – Weird Tales
Self released – 2022
Rock, Stoner, Desert, Psych, Metal, Punk
Rated: ****

We voted for their Weird Tales album for the January 2022 edition of the Doom Charts and were happy to see that Cormano made it onto the list. The Chilean three-piece delivers a highly atmospheric stoner rock album that immediately captivates you with that huge opening track La Marcha Del Desierto. Indeed, the desert rock adventure begins immediately and hauls you along like a dying animal. Things only get more appropriately weird after that; for the vocals and lyrics are sci-fi inspired and give it a creepy edge. But what transcends it all is that majestic fuzzed out groove, that atavistic stoner rock riffing and that doom metal pounding. Weird Tales has everything we, the heavy rock fiends, initially fell in love with, in this heavy rock niche and more. And with every listening session we fall more and more in love with this album. The Cormano three know the deal! So ante up!

Sönus – Usurper of The Universe

Sönus – Usurper of The Universe
Self released/ Forbidden Place Records – 2022
Rock, Hardrock, Space, Stoner, Metal, Doom, Psych
Rated: ****

We mentioned the first release by this one-man-project in January of last year. Worlds Undreamed Of, as it was called, heralded the arrival of a new ‘Doom Metal poet, a Space Rock prophet and a troubadour of despair.’ Well, David Wachsman, the man behind Sönus, is back! On his new release Usurper of The Universe, he has evolved the project; getting aid from drummer Eduardo Salazar, multi assistance from Tyler Hovestadt and once again additional vocal support from Jaymi McGinn. And that not only grew the project into more than it was; the growth musically, in sound and production is immense. The nods towards Hawkwind and Monster Magnet were big on that first release, and they are here as well, but done in such a manner that Usurper of The Universe immediately feels like its very own Nuclear God. More jazzy and proggy touches that are inspired by bands like Captain Beyond take you straight into the heart of tracks like Amáranthine and closer Tanelorn. Namechecking those bands might sound like an obvious take on the album; since Sönus namechecks them himself. But his classic take on them sounds like a refreshing reinvention of the wheel. Every inch of this release is strong, heavy, rolling and rocking and will surely make every heavy music loving fiend out there intensely happy!

The 450s – The 450s

The 450s – The 450s
Louder Than Loud – 2022
Rock, Hardrock, Punk, Rockabilly, Blues
Rated: ***

This foursome (or actually fivesome) explodes out of the gates with spicy and excellent garage rocking opening track Flowers For Columbine. The 450s features The Rods drummer Carl Canedy and spotlights vocalist Rhett and his often pinched take on singing. It immediately gives The 450s its own signature sound. With a mix done by Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper ao) and Chris Collier (Whitesnake, Korn, Prong, ao) turn this release a bit on its side. For the feel seems to harken back to the classic hardrock sound while there is also this modern take of it all. The same can be said about certain elements like the use of string sections, highly pronounced piano parts and pop like vocal parts. It fits; but also does not, for the ‘raw’ nature of this hardrock album suddenly become all ‘velvet’ to the touch. And then there’s the flamenco inspired One King track and industrial tinged closer When God Won’t Forgive You; making the album even more diverse and uncompromising. The 450s; and their self-titled debut 12 track give you something heavy and different to chew on.
