With all the horrible news coming out of the Ukraine, it felt right to finally bring some good tidings from that part of the world. In this case we are referring to the album Thanathonaut by Kiev quartet Narrow House. The band started out in 2009 when all was well in their home country and released their first record A Key To Panngrieb back in 2012. But their new release is something else. Their highly atmospheric and powerful progressive doom metal captivates and elevates. Filled with striking and excellent use of saxophones, choirs and cellos the guys have produced ten strong compositions that move more towards the symphonic spectrum than anything else. Sure we hear their death, black and doom metal influences but they are so expertly offset by their intelligent use of orchestral elements that the bleak and desolate environment almost become angelic. Remarkable, intriguing and tremendously impressive. Thanathonaut is truly majestic and monumental!
